Hi Karen,

My maternal Grandmother Emma was a Kaun, born in Dammen, Kreis Stolp. Her father, Johann, was one of 10-14 children who were raised in Kreis Rummelsburg in Julienhof and other villages in the Treten area. Most of these children also had large families, and although many of these Kauns emigrated to the U.S., to Wisconsin primarily, others remained in Germany, and these have been difficult to trace. Friederike came to the US in 1922 with her husband, August Kannapinn, and I have researched her family well since then.

Have you looked at naturalization records through LDS? I did for Wisconsin, and found many Kauns. Perhaps your Julius was naturalized after all. If you can locate his petition for naturalization, that may list a more specific village of origin. What were the names of his brothers? Perhaps some of them eventually came to the U.S., and by tracing their naturalization, you could find village of origin for them and Julius.

Regards, Steve
