Hi Geoff

I'm afraid I've misled you. I was originally told by family members my GGGrandmother was Mary Ellen however my research shows her to have actually been Sarah Ellen KAY, according to the 1881 census. (She had a mother in law called Mary Hoyle). From there I ordered her birth cert that stated the following

Reg dist. Ashton and Oldham
1846 birth in the sub-district of Ashton in the county of Lancaster

No. 449
Born 23 October 1846 at Causeway, Royton
Name Sarah Ellen
Sex Female
Father James KAY
Mother Susanna KAY formerly OGDEN
Occ Father Broker
Sig,desc of inform. James KAY, father, Causeway, Royton
When Reg Twenty Sixth of October 1846

So they were living in Royton, Oldham at that time. Though I have not proved it yet I suspect the family below in the 1881 census to be Sarah's parents and a sister, given ages and occupation etc.

Dwelling:       53 Rochdale Rd
Census Place:       Oldham, Lancashire, England
                     Marr       Age       Sex       Birthplace
James KAY              M       65        M       Royton, Lancashire, England
       Rel:       Head
       Occ:       Timber Dealer
Susannah KAY        M       63        F       Royton, Lancashire, England
       Rel:       Wife
Elizabeth KAY        U       29        F       Royton, Lancashire, England
       Rel:       Daughter

There is still a possibility of a link given the name Ellen though this was a reasonably common name, I believe. Sarah Ellen & Edward Traynor named their 5 children Bernard Thomas Astley, Frakenburg (aka Cissie), Rose, Edward and William, do any of these names suggest a further link? They lived mostly in Salford Manchester.(Sutherland may be another name linked to this family)

Sorry about the confusion
