Have you considered the possibility that she was a widow when she married Hugh?

I note that Hugh was born in 1838. If she was of similar age then she would have been about 20 when an Alice Fletcher (no other Christian name given) married at Chorley in 1858. The same register page has a George Kaye according to FreeBMD. It's a long shot - there's only a 50% chance that Alice was George's bride - but if she remains a problem it's the sort of thing you might need to chase up.
