Family of Littleton Madison Keeling of Elbert & Habersham GA
LITTLETON MADISON KEELING was born on 26 Dec 1819 near Baskersville in Elbert County, GA (now part of Hart County) on a Savannah River farm within a quarter-mile of the county line, according to a family letter. His family moved in Feb 1837 to a 500 acre farm at "Keelings Crossing" in Habersham County, GA, one mile below what is now Toccoa GA on Eastanollee Creek (according to another family letter). He married Judith Pamela Ayers on 3 Dec 1846 at Dix Hill farm in Habersham County. For a period around 1850 the family lived in Cherokee County, GA (see Lucy Elizabeth Keeling, below). From Sep 1863 to Aug 1864 during the Civil War he served in Co. H 24th Ga. Vol. Inf., in which two of his brothers (George Washington and Moses Monroe) also had served. In 1882 Littleton sold his land on Eastanollee Creek and moved to Jenkins Ferry Road (a few miles east of Avalon, GA), according to a family letter. He moved in 1892 to Toccoa, where he died on 14 Dec 1905 and was buried there at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery. His photograph and tombstone are shown on findagrave.com. Other accounts (see msg. #799 on this forum) have his day of birth as 20 Dec, but his Georgia Confederate pension application clearly states 26 Dec.
Judith Pamela Ayers was born at Dix Hill in Habersham County, GA on 23 Dec 1827 to Nathaniel Ayers and Milcah Elizabeth Walters, and was the sister of Elizabeth Ayers, the first wife of George Washington Keeling. She died on 24 Oct 1903 and was buried at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery. Her photograph and tombstone are shown on findagrave.com. The 1900 census records that 8 of her 14 children were living. Those children were:

I regret that my tables of dates above and below were mangled by GenForum's software - extra spaces are deleted and a variable-width font is standard, making a tabular arrangement impossible. Family names listed in caps in the tables are women's married names. Any information in angle brackets ("<...>", here or below) is from Internet or other sources that are difficult or impossible to confirm using documents. This device allows one to judge which information is fairly solid, although most information passed down through a family is expected to be reasonably accurate, even though the original sources (such as a family bible) may have been lost. To save space I have used the abbreviations SSDI for the Social Security Death Index, HSCG for "The History of Stephens County Georgia" by Kathryn Curtis Trogdon, GDI for the Georgia death index, and SCDI for the excellent online Stephens County death index, which lists full names. Stephens County cemetery listings come from "Cemetery Inscriptions of Stephens County Georgia, Volume 1." Each of the 14 children in the table above is numbered and listed below in caps, followed by the grandchildren in a table, followed by detailed listings. These fourteen children of Littleton Madison Keeling were followed by 54 known grandchildren.
(1) LUCY ELIZABETH KEELING was born on 23 Apr 1848 in Cherokee County, GA (according to two family letters and her cemetery listing) and died 24 May 1915 in Talladega Springs, Talladega County, AL, according to her death certificate. She and her family had moved near Wilsonville in Shelby County, AL shortly after 1890, and she was buried there at Wilsonville Cemetery (tombstone on findagrave.com). She married James Wilson Kytle [27 Jan 1852 - 29 Mar 1926; buried Mt. Pleasant Baptist in Stephens County, GA] on 22 Dec 1870 in Habersham County, GA. After Lucy's death he married Bessie Mae Nix and had two more children: Hoyt Wilson Kytle and Fairo Mae Kytle. The 1900 and 1910 censuses record that 9 of 12 of Lucy's children were living.
The children of James Wilson and Lucy Elizabeth KEELING Kytle were:

Robert Calvin Kytle was named in a family letter written by John M. Kytle ABT 1896. The order of names of the Kytle children suggests that he was the first-born child. The partial date of birth comes from a genealogy.com web page. He is not listed in the 1880 census, and nothing else is known.
John Madison Kytle was born on 16 Oct 1874 in GA, died on 25 Oct 1960 in Sylacauga, Talladega County, AL, and was buried at Talladega Springs Cemetery in that county, according to his tombstone (on findagrave.com) and his Alabama death certificate summary on FamilySearch Labs. A family letter also lists that date of birth, but his WWI draft card lists 1873 as the year of birth (and the correct age for that birth year). He married Georgia Anna POPE [27 Nov 1869 - 16 Feb 1951; buried Talladega Springs] on <16 Feb 1898>. Although Georgia's death certificate lists her birth on 28 Nov 1871, and her tombstone (on findagrave.com) has 27 Nov 1870, she is listed in the 1870 census with Hopson and Harriet Pope (her parents, as given in her death certificate) as born in Dec 1869, and in the 1900 census as Nov 1870. The year 1869 is obviously correct, and November is the probable month.
Stella Sybilla Kytle was born on 2 Mar 1876 (according to her tombstone on findagrave.com and a family letter) in GA, died on 11 Sep 1970 (according to her Birmingham News obituary and Alabama death certificate summary on FamilySearch Labs), and was buried at Talladega Springs Cemetery in Talladega County, AL. Her SSDI listing has her month of birth as Apr. She married Oliver Byrd NORRED [31 Aug 1869 - 12 May 1955; buried Talladega Springs] on 2 Oct 1895 in Shelby County, AL. The date of birth on his tombstone (on findagrave.com) has 1868 (consistent with the 1880 census), but the 1900 census lists 1869, which is consistent with his Alabama death certificate summary on FamilySearch Labs.
Emory Speer Kytle was born on 14 Oct 1878 (according to his WWI draft card) in GA, died on 20 Mar 1969 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, AL (according to his Alabama death certificate summary on FamilySearch Labs), and was buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Haralson County, GA (according to his Birmingham News obituary). He married Ethel MASON [Jan 1886 - 29 Dec 1970; buried Hollywood] on 8 Feb 1905 in Wilsonville, Shelby County, AL.
Emma Lee "Ima" Kytle was the twin of Emory Speer Kytle and was born on 14 Oct 1878 in GA, died on 22 May 1963 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, AL, and was buried at Wilsonville Cemetery in Shelby County, AL, according to her tombstone on findagrave.com and her Birmingham News obituary. She married Earnest Byron LINDSEY [26 Aug 1878 - 1 Feb 1955; buried Wilsonville] ABT Dec 1912. The marriage license was issued 5 Dec 1912 in Shelby County, AL, but a marriage date was not entered, leaving 5 Dec as the likely marriage date. Her middle name comes from her husband's WWI draft card.
Garnett Kytle was born on 12 Jul 1881 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA, died on 30 Jul 1956 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, LA, and was buried there at Greenwood Cemetery, according to his death certificate. His WWI draft card indicates that he had no middle name. He married Ida WELDON [<28> Jul 1885 - 7 Mar 1928] on 18 Jan 1903 in Shelby County, AL.
Mary Elizabeth "Belle" Kytle was born on 17 Sep 1883 in GA, died on 20 Sep 1971 in Asheville, Buncombe County, NC, and was buried at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, GA, according to her death certificate. She married Albert Boone TUMLIN [1 Mar 1877 - 10 Aug 1945] on 24 Dec 1902 in Shelby County, AL.
James Arlin Kytle was born on 7 Aug 1886 in Habersham County, GA (according to his WWI draft card), died on 28 Sep 1968 in Kenner, Jefferson Parish, LA, and was buried at Wilsonville Cemetery in Shelby County, AL, according to his Birmingham News obituary and his tombstone on findagrave.com. He married Rosa E. CARDEN [8 Dec 1888 - 18 Jun 1926; buried Wilsonville] on 4 Mar 1909 in Shelby County, AL.
Lucy Elberta Kytle was born on 24 Jun 1890 in Ayersville, Habersham County, GA, died on 4 Nov 1975 in Decatur, DeKalb County, GA, and was buried at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, according to her death certificate. She married Walter Erle DALEY [27 Aug 1889 - 11 Dec 1936] on 23 Sep 1925. He had been previously married to Mayre Lois VERNER. A family letter gives her year of birth as 1889, but this disagrees with all other information (SSDI, DC, and 1900 census).
Myrtis Alabama "Myrtie" Kytle was born on 25 Jun 1893 in Heflin, AL, died on 30 Sep 1956 in Sylacauga, Talladega County, AL, and was buried there at Sylacauga Cemetery, according to her death certificate, which does not list a middle name. The cemetery is likely to be the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Sylacauga. Her middle name comes from a family letter. A relative who knew Myrtie well believes that her middle name may have been "unofficial", since her father wanted to use that name to reflect that she was the only Kytle child born in AL, but her mother would not agree. Myrtie married Richard Lanier WEBSTER [12 Feb 1890 - 18 Oct 1970; buried Evergreen Memorial Cemetery] on 24 Aug 1913 in Talladega Springs, Talladega County, AL.
The 1900 census lists two additional children who were not alive in 1900. Nothing else is known.
(2) JAMES WASHINGTON KEELING was born on 18 Oct 1849 and died on 23 Nov 1850 (both almost certainly in Cherokee County, GA - he is listed there in the Oct 1850 census), according to a (transcription of a) family letter. A genealogy.com web page lists the year of death as 1856, suggesting that a digit in a handwritten letter might have been misread. Nothing more is known.
(3) WILLIAM HANSELL KEELING was born on 10 Dec 1851 in GA, died on 4 Jun 1934 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA, and was buried at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery, according to his death certificate and his tombstone. He married Mary Elizabeth DOOLEY [7 Sep 1858 - 9 Apr 1942; buried Zebulon] on 16 Sep 1877 in Habersham County, GA. The 1900 and 1910 censuses list 4 of 5 and 3 of 5 of her children as living, respectively.
The children of William Hansell and Mary Elizabeth DOOLEY Keeling were:
Lula Jane LYLES11 Feb 187913 May 1944

Lula Jane Keeling was born on 11 Feb 1879 in GA, died on 13 May 1944, and was buried at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA, according to her tombstone. No death certificate has been found. She married Jason Jonah LYLES [20 Jun 1878- 16 Dec 1954; buried Zebulon] on 10 Mar 1901 in Habersham County, GA.
Luther Jackson Keeling (twin to Lula) was born on 11 Feb 1879 in GA, died on 13 Sep 1963 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA (according to his WWI draft card and the SCDI), and was buried at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA, (according to his tombstone). He married Mamie
John Henry Keeling was born on 11 Oct 1881 in GA, died on 25 Nov 1907, and was buried at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA. The full name and dates come from a family letter and Thomas Madison Keeling's diary. His tombstone lists only his middle initial and years of birth and death.
William Arlin Keeling was born on 15 Aug 1895, and died BEF 1900. The name and date of birth come from a family letter. He is not in the 1900 census, and nothing else is known.
Wilburn Spencer "Spence" Keeling was born on 12 May 1898 in GA, died on 10 Apr 1977 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA, and was buried at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA. His first name is given as Wilburn on his WWI draft card, in the 1900 census, and in a family letter, but as Wilbur on the SCDI and the SSDI. He married Lola May TERRELL [10 Mar 1898 - 12 Aug 1961; buried Zebulon] on 27 Oct 1918 in Stephens County.
(4) MILCAH LOUIZA KEELING was born 1 Feb 1854 or 1853, and died in Oct 1854. Two family documents give those dates, and list her first name as either "Micca" (a letter written by John M. Kytle) or "Milech" (a badly typed copy of a letter from Thomas Madison Keeling, son of Littleton, to my grandfather). Only the first of these is a recognized female name ("Micah"), butMilech is a close rendering of "Milcah," which is the name of Littleton Madison Keeling's mother-in-law, Milcah Elizabeth WALTERS Ayers, and I believe that the latter name is the most likely. No other information is available.
(5) MARTHA ANNE KEELING was born on 10 Oct 1855 in GA, died at home in Stephens County, GA on 2 May 1948, and was buried at Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, according to her Toccoa Record obituary and the cemetery listing. No death certificate exists. She married Walton Crawford Taylor [27 Jan 1853 - 11 Dec 1918; buried Liberty Hill] on 8 Feb 1877 in Habersham County, GA. The 1900 and 1910 censuses list 12 of 14 children as living.

Rosa Burnette Taylor was born on 15 May 1878 in GA (SSDI), died on 5 Jul 1971 in Cleveland, White County, GA (according to the SCDI), and was buried at Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Stephens County, GA, according to the SCDI and her Greenville [SC] News obituary. Her name is given as Rosalie Burnettie in a family letter, but all other information (cemetery index, SSDI, SCDI, and the obituary of her mother) suggests the name Rosa (called Rosie, according to her marriage license). She married William Martin HICKS [26 Nov 1874 - 20 Nov 1935; buried Liberty Hill] on 1 Nov 1896 in Habersham County, GA.
Walton Alexander Stephens Taylor was born on 7 Nov 1879 in GA (WWI draft card), died on 6 Jun 1952 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA (SCDI), and was buried at Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Stephens County, GA, according to that cemetery's listings and his Toccoa Record obituary. His first name is given as either Walton (the 1880 and 1910 censuses, a family letter, and in HSCG) or Walter (obituary, SCDI, and WWI draft card, although the signature on the latter is badly blurred on the first name and doesn't look like either possibility). His full middle names come from a family letter; note that Stephens County, GA was named after Alexander H. Stephens. He married Vina Estell AYERS [7 Sep 1880 - 16 Oct 1962; buried Liberty Hill] on 7 Oct 1900 in Habersham County, GA.
William Harrison Taylor was born on 5 Mar 1881 in GA (WWI draft card), died on 20 Sep 1952 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA (SCDI), and was buried at Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Stephens County, GA, according to that cemetery's listings and his Toccoa Record obituary. He married Cora Etta DAVIS [17 Apr 1885 - 24 Jan 1940; buried Liberty Hill] on 21 Dec 1903 in Habersham County, GA.
Ella Mae Taylor was born on 23 May 1883 (according to her Toccoa Record obituary) in (present-day) Stephens County, GA (according to her death certificate), died on 29 Sep 1952 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA, and was buried at Carnes Creek Cemetery in Stephens County, GA, according to her death certificate and obituary. The HSCG lists her date of birth as 30 May 1883. She married Marion Hezekiah DAVIS [11 Mar 1880 - 5 May 1931; buried Carnes Creek] on 2 Feb 1902 in Habersham County, GA.
Littleton Franklin Taylor was born on 18 Aug 1884 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA, died on 22 Jul 1945 in Orlando, Orange County, FL, and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando, Orange County, FL, according to his death certificate. His WWI draft card spells his given names "Lyttleton Franklin", while his DC lists his name as "Littleton Frank". He married Sarah Nancy ISBELL [25 Nov 1891 - 16 Mar 1982; buried Greenwood] on <31 Oct> 1915. She later married and divorced Ralph Albert Chamberlain in Orange County, FL in 1950.
Caleb Madison Taylor was born on 1 Apr 1886 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA (WWI draft card and obituary in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution), died on 27 Sep 1958 in Fulton County, GA, and was buried there at College Park Cemetery, according to his obituary. He married Clara Mae DUVALL [22 Jan 1891 - 8 Apr 1978; buried College Park] on <19 Oct 1910> in
Oscar Lee Taylor was born on 13 Mar 1888 in (present-day) Stephens County, GA (WWI draft card), died on 4 May 1965 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA (SCDI), and was buried at Liberty Hill Cemetery in Stephens County, GA, according to that cemetery's survey. He married Annie Lou Sayer [15 Mar 1883 - 25 Nov 1965; Liberty Hill] on 21 Dec 1907 in Stephens County, GA.
A twin to Oscar Lee Taylor was born on 13 Mar 1888, according to the web site "Descendants of Theophilus Taylor". A family letter states that the (two) Taylor children unlisted therein (see Martha Ann Keeling listing above) were stillborn. Nothing more is known.
Thomas Hilliard Taylor was born on 18 Dec 1889 in (present-day) Stephens County, GA (WWI draft card), died on 6 Sep 1961 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA (SCDI), and was buried at Liberty Hill Cemetery in Stephens County, GA (SCDI and cemetery listing). He married Mary

Vada Savilla Taylor was born on 7 Jul 1893 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA, died on 2 May 1978 in Greenville, Greenville County, SC, and was buried at Springwood Cemetery in Greenville County, SC, according to her Greenville [SC] News obituary and that cemetery's listings on findagrave.com. Her full middle name is listed in HSCG, and with a slightly different spelling in a family letter. She married John William Adams [17 Apr 1879 - 19 Mar 1944; buried Springwood] on 14 May 1916 in Stephens County, GA. She later married William Thomas Anderson [13 Aug 1881 - 3 Jan 1969; buried Springwood] AFT 1948.
Viola Ann Taylor was born on 28 Sep 1895 in GA (SSDI), died on 15 Jul 1982 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA, and was buried at Stephens Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Stephens County, GA, according to the SCDI. Vernice Cleo Taylor was born on 30 Jul 1898 in (present-day) Stephens County, GA, died on 26 Dec 1971 in Greenville, Greenville County, SC (according to her Greenville [SC] News obituary), and was buried at Liberty Hill Cemetery, according to that cemetery's listings. She never married.
An unknown Taylor was stillborn before 1900, according to a family letter and Martha Taylor's 1900 census listing. There is no further information.
(6) ELIZA JANE KEELING was born on 30 Mar 1857 (according to her tombstone) in Habersham County, GA, died on 10 May 1924 in Clarke County, GA, and was buried at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery, according to the cemetery listing and her death certificate. Her death certificate gives her birth date as 3 Mar 1858; that year is not consistent with her 1900 census listing (Mar 1857) and other censuses. She married William Thomas Walker Brock [1 Aug 1859 - 1 Jun 1940; buried Zebulon] on 27 Dec 1883 in Franklin County, according to a family letter. The 1900 and 1910 censuses list 7 of 9 and 6 of 9 children as living, respectively.
The children of William Thomas Walker and Eliza Jane KEELING Brock were:

A letter written by his brother Pope states that Talmage never married.
Norman Brock was born on 17 May 1886 in GA (WWI draft card), died on 10 Sep 1951 in DeKalb County, GA (GDI), and was buried at Hunters Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Franklin County, GA, according to a family letter. He married Nora E
Pope Furman Brock was born on 13 Oct 1888 in Avalon, Stephens County, GA (WWI draft card), died on 19 Jul 1983 in Atlanta, Fulton County, GA, and was buried at Arlington Cemetery in Fulton County, GA, according to his death certificate. A portrait photograph exists at "http://digital.library.louisville.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/matthews&CISOPTR=504&CISOBOX=1&REC=6". He married Alice C. Reppard Brock was born on 4 Mar 1890 in (present-day) Stephens County, GA, died on 1 Nov 1937 in Ila, Madison County, GA, and was buried at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery in Stephens County, GA, according to her death certificate. She married Franklin H. Nash [4 Nov 1890 - 5 Dec 1980; Glen Haven Memorial Park in Winter Park, FL] ABT 1925.
Gertrude Brock was born on 3 May 1892, died on 7 Feb 1893, and was buried at the Camp Family Cemetery in Stephens County, GA, according to that cemetery's listings.
Coy Virginia Brock was born on 18 Sep 1893 in (present-day) Stephens County, GA, died on 30 Dec 1985 in Douglasville, Douglas County, GA, and was buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in East Point, Fulton County, GA, according to her death certificate. She married Thomas Gabriel Nash [15 Mar 1887 - 7 Mar 1936] on 26 Nov 1916 in Madison County, GA.
An unnamed infant was born on 4 Mar 1896 and was buried at Camp Family Cemetery in Stephens County, GA, according to that cemetery's listings, and was stillborn, according to a family letter.
Vance L. Brock was born on 5 Feb 1897 in GA, died on 28 May 1908, and was buried at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA, according to his tombstone and his obituary in the Lavonia Times on 5 Jun 1908.
William Alexander Hamilton Brock was born on 16 Dec 1899 in GA, died on 15 Aug 1910, and was buried at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA, according to his tombstone. He is listed as Alex and William H. in the 1900 and 1910 censuses, and Hamilton on his tombstone. I have adopted a composite as the most likely name. The Stephens County cemetery listing for Zebulon has his date of death as 6 Aug, which disagrees with his tombstone.
(7) MOSES HENDRICKS KEELING was born on 4 Sep 1859 in GA, died on 10 Apr 1873 (according to a family letter), and was buried at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery, according to the published cemetery survey. That survey gives the year of birth as 1850, in disagreement with his 1860 and 1870 census listings. It also gives the year of death as 1878. Both discrepancies could easily result from difficulties reading the tombstone.
(8) ROBERT MCMILLIAN KEELING was born on 19 Jan 1862 and died on 15 Aug 1863, according to two family letters. The account of this family in HSCG lists his middle name as "McMillan." No other information is available.
(9) GEORGIANA SAMANTHA "Georgie" KEELING was born on 23 Oct 1863 in Habersham County, GA, died on 16 Jun 1939 in Cornelia, Habersham County, GA, and was buried at Level Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Habersham County, GA. The date of birth is given in a family letter and the family bible of a son, while the date of death is given in the bible and in her obituary in an unknown newspaper (a clipping exists). No death certificate has been found. Her first name is taken from two family letters (by her nephew John M. Kytle and by Thomas M. Keeling, her brother), but was more often rendered as "Georgia Ann" or "Georgia A." She married James Count Pulaski Friar (called "CP" or "Count") [13 Apr 1866 - 15 May 1923; buried Level Grove] on 1 Apr 1888, according to the bible. The 1900 and 1910 censuses list 3 of 3 and 4 of 4 children as living, respectively. She was my Keeling great grandmother.

Cora Olive Belle "Cora" Friar was born on 23 Nov 1888 in Avalon, Stephens County, GA, died on 23 Jan 1978 in Eustis, Lake County, FL, and was buried at Tavares Cemetery in Tavares, Lake County, FL, according to her death certificate and the family bible. She married Charles Franklin "Charlie" Kesler [23 Dec 1884 - 19 Jul 1960; buried Tavares] on 24 Feb 1913 in Stephens County, GA. An attempt by her father (CP) to obtain college tuition for Cora led to the start of the Student Aid Foundation in Georgia [http://www.studentaidfoundation.org/history.html].
James Luther ("Luther" or "JL") Friar was born on 10 Jan 1892 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA, died on 7 May 1971 in Orlando, Orange County, FL, and was buried at Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Orlando, according to his death certificate. He married Della HARRELSON [12 Feb 1896 - 13 Jul 1947; buried Forest Hill in Birmingham AL] on 19 May 1914 in Appling County, GA. He next married Sallie M. CONOLEY [11 Apr 1901 - 27 Dec 1994; buried Woodlawn] in Orlando in 1952. She had been previously married to William H. Hayward. Luther and Della were my grandparents.
Myrtie Gertrude "Myrtie" Friar was born on 7 Jan 1894 in Atlanta, GA, died on 8 Apr 1936 in Athens, Clarke County, GA, and was buried there at Lester Cemetery, according to her death certificate and a family bible. She married Jonas Edward Mills [25 Jun 1889 - 5 Jun 1975; buried Lester] on 25 May 1916 in Stephens County, GA.
John Madison Lester "Lester" Friar was born on 6 Jul 1900 in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA, died on 13 Feb 1963 in Tavares, Lake County, FL, and was buried there at Tavares Cemetery, according to his family bible and his death certificate. (10) LEONARD FRANKLIN KEELING was born on 4 Sep 1867 and died on 16 Oct 1867, according to two family letters. No other information is available.
(11) THOMAS MADISON KEELING was born on 5 Sep 1868 (according to two family letters, including one written by him) in GA, died on 5 Dec 1952 in Cornelia, Habersham County, GA, and was buried at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery in Toccoa, GA, according to his death certificate. "Uncle Tom" Keeling, who was well remembered by my father and his cousins, compiled much information about the history of the Georgia Keelings. He never married.
(12) MARY ETTA MOSELLE KEELING was born on 29 Jun 1870 in GA, died on 27 May 1949 in Emory, DeKalb County, GA, and was buried at the Mt. Carmel Christian Church Ousley Chapel churchyard in DeKalb County, according to her death certificate and Atlanta Constitution obituary. Her first two names have also been frequently rendered as "Marietta". Census listings are consistent with Mary Etta or Etta Mary and two of her children's death certificates and a family letter are consistent with this name, while another family letter and the death certificates of two other children list Marietta. The Raymond Keeling Hulsey bible lists both forms. Her middle name Moselle was obtained from a letter written by her brother, Thomas, and is one of many variants of the same middle name used by the Georgia Keelings (see msg #1112). She married Robert Jeremiah Hulsey [25 Sep 1866 - 14 Nov 1942; buried Mt. Carmel] on 13 Jan 1889 in Franklin County, GA. The 1900 and 1910 censuses list 3 of 5 and 7 of 9 children as living, respectively.
The children of Robert Jeremiah and Mary Etta Moselle KEELING Hulsey were:

Ezra Speer Hulsey was born on 8 Dec 1889 in GA, died on 15 Dec 1960 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, CA, and was buried at the Los Angeles National Cemetery, according to his death certificate. He served in WWI. He married Carrie WELLS [8 Nov 1887 - 27 May 1947; buried Hollywood Cemetery in Atlanta, GA] on 17 Sep 1911 in Atlanta, GA, according to an announcement in the Atlanta Constitution newspaper. In the 1920 census she is listed as widowed. She is listed as widowed from Ezra S. Hulsey in her death certificate, although his death certificate states that he was divorced. Presumably they were separated or divorced, and the couple had different views of the matter.
Flavel Anton Hulsey was born on 7 Jul 1891 in Habersham County, GA, died on 19 Oct 1958 in Atlanta, DeKalb County, GA, and was buried at College Park Cemetery in College Park, Fulton County, GA, according to his death certificate. She married Seaborn Guyton JONES [11 May 1895 - 23 Sep 1956; buried Resthaven] in 1916.
Robert Jeremiah Hulsey, Jr. was born on 28 Jul 1900 in Atlanta, GA, died on 25 Sep 1973 in Columbus, Muskogee County, GA, and was buried at Roosevelt Memorial Church Cemetery in Pine Mountain Valley, Harris County, GA, according to his death certificate. He married Vallie Hall [31 Jul 1907 - 11 Jan 1995; buried Myrtle Hill Memorial Park in Tampa FL] on 24 Feb 1923 (divorced - she later married Jesse Eugene Dickerson), according to their Fulton County, GA marriage license and a marriage announcement in the Atlanta Constitution newspaper. The Vallie Hall with these dates was born in Decatur, GA, and is the only one that I have found whose dates and places would be remotely possible for this marriage. Claude married Daisye Ola WHATLEY [20 May 1909 - 13 Nov 2003; buried Westview] in 1931.
Elva Marguerite Hulsey was born on 22 Apr 1906 in Fulton County, GA, died on 27 Nov 1994 in Covington, Newton County, GA, and was buried at Fairview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Conyers, Rockdale County, GA, according to her death certificate. Edith Grace Hulsey was born on 7 Oct 1907 in GA, died on 7 Oct 1923 in Atlanta, Fulton County, GA, and was buried at College Park Cemetery in College Park, Fulton County, GA, according to her death certificate. She was unmarried.
Raymond Keeling "Ray" Hulsey was born on 10 Jun 1911 in GA, died on 7 Mar 1993 in Covington, Newton County, GA, and was buried at Fairview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Conyers, Rockdale County, GA, according to his death certificate. Although almost every listing of his name has "Ray", the 1920 census has "Raymond K." He married Eva Ophelia WEBB [5 Jun 1916 - 2 Apr 1992; buried Fairview] on 11 Jul 1936.
(13) NEWTON KEELING was born on 5 Jan 1873 and died on 7 Aug 1873, according to a family letter. Another less reliable letter gives the year as 1875. No other information is available.

I would like to extend my special thanks to Ron and Cindy Lyles for their exceptional help with this entire family, to Gene Beauregard Friar for providing family bible information about Georgiana KEELING Friar's descendants, and to Diane Godley for providing family bible information about Mary Etta KEELING Hulsey's descendants. If anyone spots errors or has missing information (such as documentation for information in angle brackets), I would be grateful if they would send me an email message.
