Family of Moses Monroe Keeling of Elbert & Habersham Counties, GA
Posted by: Jim Friar (ID *****4249) Date: July 30, 2011 at 12:28:23
  of 1246

MOSES MONROE KEELING was born on 6 Dec 1815 in (almost certainly) Elbert County, GA to Leonard and Elizabeth HAYNES Keeling (see msg #799 for compiled lists of dates and names of their children), and was called "Mose." He married Phoebe SCOTT in Franklin County, GA on 7 Jan 1841. The couple moved to Forsyth County, GA and are listed there in the 1845 Georgia state census and the 1850 Federal census. They then moved back to Franklin County, GA and are listed there in the 1860 census. Moses enlisted in Co. H 24th Ga. Vol. Inf. Reg't in 1861 during the Civil War; his brother George Washington Keeling had been an officer in that unit. A story passed down in the Lewis Monroe Keeling family (see below) by a granddaughter says that Lewis enlisted first and then Moses enlisted "to take care of him". Moses was discharged as overage in 1864, while Phoebe was listed in Franklin County on the 1864 GA Salt Records. In 1870 the family was in Franklin County, TN, and in 1870 or 1871 (according to a family letter written by Roy Eldon Keeling, son of Henry S. Keeling - see below) they had reached Taylor Twp. in what is now Nevada County, AR. An account in "The History of Freestone County Texas" by Willie Mae KEELING Beaver states that after the death of Moses and Phoebe Scott Keeling "the family all moved to TX," and also that the Robert Leonard Keeling family (see below) moved to Wortham, TX "by train in 1894 from Nevada County, Arkansas". Robert Leonard sold his Nevada County land in Feb 1891, so early 1890s is a reasonable date for his parents' deaths and I have adopted "ABT 1894". The family letter mentioned above also states: "Mose Keeling and wife are buried in a small cemetery near Nashville Ark. - my dad and I visited the graves in 1961. It is a small cemetery out in the country some distance from Nashville - closest town name Bingen (where I was born) - To our surprise the cemetery was well kept by neighbor...". This cemetery is likely to be in Mine Creek Twp. of Hempstead County, AR, where Bingen is located. The most likely cemetery is Ozan Cemetery, where many Keeling descendants were buried, but no cemetery surveys for this area list Moses or Phoebe, and their graves were either unmarked or now unreadable. A photograph of Moses and his son Lewis in Civil War uniform is shown on the Keeling Family Website, which is part of Myfamily.com.

Phoebe SCOTT Keeling was born ABT 1823, and died between 1880 and 1894 (see above). She was most probably buried in Mine Creek Twp. of Hempstead County, AR, and most likely there at Ozan Cemetery (see above). The estate records of Franklin County GA (1854-56) state that she is the daughter of Robert Scott (see msg #837). The couple had at least 7 children (based solely on census records); any other children would necessarily have died while young (i.e., between censuses). The couple's children were:

Lewis Monroe 24 Sep 1842 23 Dec 1920
William Jeptha 2 Jan 1845 10 Mar 1939
Robert Leonard 24 Oct 1849 2 Jan 1914
Mary Jane HONEA 27 Dec 1851 13 Jun 1937
Joseph Washington 1 Mar 1857 15 Sep 1928
Elizabeth Melvina STOTT 2 Apr 1860 14 Oct 1918
Sarah Emma SHADDOX 8 Sep 1865 18 Oct 192-

I regret that my tables of dates above and below were mangled by GenForum's software - extra spaces are deleted and a variable-width font is standard, making a tabular arrangement impossible. Family names listed in caps in the tables are women's married names. Any information in angle brackets ("<...>", here or below) is from Internet or other sources that are difficult or impossible to confirm using documents. This device allows one to judge which information is fairly solid, although most information passed down through a family is expected to be reasonably accurate, even though the original sources (such as a family bible) may have been lost. To save space I have used the abbreviation SSDI for the Social Security Death Index, TDI for the Texas Death Index, and HCAC for the "Hempstead County, Arkansas Cemeteries - Vol. 3". Note also that Arkansas and Louisiana have a 50-year exclusion period for obtaining copies of death certificates. Each of the 7 children in the table above is numbered and listed below in caps, followed by the grandchildren in a table, followed by detailed listings for the grandchildren. These 7 children of Moses Monroe Keeling were followed by 61 known grandchildren.

(1) LEWIS MONROE KEELING was born in Franklin County, GA (from his Texas Confederate pension) on 24 Sep 1842, died on 23 Dec 1920 in Irving, Dallas County, TX, and was buried there at Kit Cemetery (sometimes called Old Kit), according to his pension records and grave marker photographs on findagrave.com and teafor2.com. No death certificate was found. A letter from his son-in-law (R. S. Cox - see below) to the Texas State Controller contained in the pension file states that Lewis died in Cox's home on 22 Dec, while other information in that file states 23 Dec. Lewis married Mary Jane STOTT [24 or 15 Nov 1845 - 6 Apr 1908; buried Kit] on 6 Nov 1864 in Franklin County, GA. Her marker is shown on findagrave.com and teafor2.com, but no death certificate was found. The 1900 census lists 6 of 8 children as living.

One mystery that I have not been able to solve is contained in a letter written by Roy Eldon Keeling (son of Henry S. Keeling - see below) to his cousin Arthur Alton Keeling (son of Allen Terrell Keeling - see below) on 20 Mar 1979. Roy states that he found some entries at the back of the family bible (instead of the front, where most of the family information was contained). One entry has Moses Monroe Keeling born Roanoke VA on 3 Dec 1812, which disagrees with all other information - all census entries indicate that Moses was born in GA. Another has Phoebe L. (SCOTT) Keeling born Roanoke VA on 15 Oct 1815, which is also at odds with all census records. Another entry has Louis Marcellus Keeling born Carnsville [sic] GA on 24 Sep 1842. The date and location (Carnesville is in Franklin County, GA) are in agreement with other accounts, but the middle name (Marcellus) is not the conventional one (Monroe). A son and two grandsons of Joseph Washington Keeling (son of Moses) had the name Marcellus (various spellings), as did a grandson of Lewis. A granddaughter of Lewis (Betty Mae KEELING Starbuck - now deceased) told me that the bible burned in a house fire, so that it's not possible to check the entry. Another entry at the back of the bible has Mary Jane (STOTT) Keeling born in Spartanburg, SC on 24 Nov 1845. While the day of death does not match her grave marker, she was born in SC and the rest of the date agrees with the marker. The almost certain errors in the listing for Moses and Phoebe make me suspicious about the accuracy (and entry dates) for the other information at the back of that bible, but I have not been able to rule out either middle name for Lewis, and have adopted the conventional one. If anyone can help with this problem I would be very grateful.

The children of Lewis Monroe and Mary Jane STOTT Keeling were:

Harriett E. ABT 1866 1870-1880
Allen Terrell 22 Sep 1867 4 Dec 1957
Henry Sanford 11 Aug 1869 15 Apr 1966
unknown BEF 1900 BEF 1900
John L<ee> Jan 1875 ABT 1908
Mabell Amanda COX 17 May 1877 7 Sep 1956
Luella Nov 1879 AFT 1903
Joseph Oscar 9 Jul 1882 20 May 1930

Harriett E. Keeling was born ABT 1866 in GA, according to the 1870 census. She is not listed thereafter in any document that I could find, almost certainly died between 1870 and 1880, and is one of the two non-surviving children listed in the 1900 census (i.e., 6 of 8 were living).

Allen Terrell Keeling was born on 22 Sep 1867 in GA, died on 4 Dec 1957 in Mabank, Kaufman County, TX, and was buried at Oaklawn Cemetery of Mabank in Henderson County, TX, according to his death certificate. That document lists his place of birth as Atlanta, GA, but Franklin County in more likely. He married Mary Emeline DAVIS [11 Dec 1868 - 31 May 1926; buried Oaklawn] in <Jan 1887> in AR. Her death certificate has that middle name, but her cemetery listing has the middle name Elizabeth. He subsequently married Grace STANLEY [5 Mar 1887 - 13 Jul 1958; buried Oaklawn] ABT 1927.

Henry Sanford Keeling was born on 11 Aug 1869 in TN, died on 15 Apr 1966 in Inglewood, Los Angeles County, CA, and was buried there at Inglewood Park Cemetery, according to his death certificate. He married Emma J<udson> HARDY [17 Jul 1874 - 21 Jul 1910; buried Kit] on 11 Jun 1891 in AR, according to her obituary on findagrave.com, which lists the day of death as 20 Jul. He married Minnie I<cea> CORBAN [21 Mar 1878 - 17 Aug 1966; buried Inglewood Park] on 19 Jan 1911 in Galveston County, TX.

John L<ee> Keeling was born in Jan 1875 in AR, according to the 1900 census, but there is little or no information thereafter. He was called "L. John" in the 1880 census, and "John L." in the 1900 census. There is no WWI draft registration and he was likely dead by 1910. Family information from Larry Keeling indicates that "Lee Keeling" died in 1908. For that reason I have tentatively assigned Lee as John's other name. He was single in 1900 and no Dallas County marriage license was found.

Mabell Amanda Keeling was born on 17 May 1877 in AR, died on 7 Sep 1956 in Dallas, TX, and was buried at Kit Cemetery in Irving, Dallas County, TX, according to her death certificate and Dallas [TX] Morning News obituary. Her name is spelled Mabell on her grave marker shown on findagrave.com, and Mabel on her death certificate and obituary. She married Roland Smith COX [18 Jan 1878 - 2 Feb 1951; buried Kit] on 1 Oct 1896 in Hempstead County, AR. His first name is signed "Rolan" on his WWI draft card.

Luella Keeling was born in Nov 1879 in AR, according to the 1880 and 1900 censuses. There is only speculative information thereafter. In the 1920 census Coy H. Keeling was living in the household of Joseph Oscar Keeling (see below) as a nephew. Coy later served as a fireman in the Irving Fire Dept. with his cousin Joseph Weldon Keeling, son of Joseph Oscar. Coy's Dallas County (delayed) birth certificate lists his place of birth as Irving, TX, and his mother as Miss Eller Keeling. His year of birth was 1903 on the (delayed) birth certificate, but 1905 on his SS-5 (Social Security Application). Family information states that Coy was an orphan, but locating an orphanage has proven unsuccessful, nor have I located him in the 1910 census. It seems very likely (but unproven) that Luella Keeling had a son in 1903 or 1905 and that she died shortly thereafter. Miss Ella Keeling married Daniel Wilson CUNNINGHAM [20 Jun 1868 - <20> Jan 1908; buried Kit] in Irving, TX on 3 Jun 1906. That Ella <Maud> CUNNINGHAM was born in 1879 and died in <Jan> 1908 and is buried at Kit Cemetery. Both markers are shown on findagrave.com. I have not located any other Ella (or Luella) Keeling in Dallas County, TX, and think it likely that Ella is Luella, daughter of Lewis Monroe Keeling, but have no further proof.

Joseph Oscar Keeling was born on 9 Jul 1882 in Nevada County, AR, died on 20 May 1930 in Irving, Dallas County, TX, and was buried there at Kit Cemetery (marker shown on findagrave.com), according to his death certificate and WWI draft card (the death certificate has the day of birth as 8 Jul). He married Essie Gertrude JONES [30 Dec 1893 - 21 Feb 1986; buried Kit] on 4 Aug 1910 in Dallas County, TX. Her marker is shown on findagrave.com.

An unknown child was born and died BEF 1900, according to the 1900 census listing for Mary Jane STOTT Keeling. The 5-year gap between Henry and John is the most likely time of birth. Nothing else is known.

(2) WILLIAM JEPTHA KEELING was born on 2 Jan 1845 in GA, died on 10 Mar 1939 at the Texas Confederate Home in Austin, Travis County, TX, and is buried there at the Texas State Cemetery. His Texas Confederate Pension application states that he was born in Franklin County, GA, while the Texas Confederate Home roster lists his birth in Habersham County, GA. His father is listed in the 1840 Habersham County census and the 1850 Forsyth County census. The 1845 Forsyth County, GA state census lists 4 persons in the household of M. M. Keeling, which is consistent with Jeptha's date of birth, and he may have been born in that county. He served in Co. K 4th Ga. Res. (Darkrel's State Troops) during the Civil War. He married Martha Ann WEBB [23 Sep 1846 - 26 Nov 1926; buried New Oak Cliff Cemetery] on 8 Nov 1868 in Habersham County, GA. The census records indicate 11 children, of whom 2 died before 1900.

The children of William Jeptha and Martha Ann WEBB Keeling were:

Orphia Ann OLSON 7 Aug 1869 7 May 1933
William P. 25 Oct 1871 19 Dec 1934
John Jay 26 Feb 1877 18 Nov 1964
Maud LANFORD 6 Jun 1879 20 Dec 1974
Georgia HANLEY LATHAM BOUNDS 10 Oct 1881 25 Jan 1974
Don Carlos 15 Mar 1884 25 Dec 1923
Margie SIMMONS POLLARD 7 Jul 1886 13 Aug 1977
Ida PENNINGTON 7 Aug 1888 12 Sep 1979
Word Lee 13 Sep 1891 25 Dec 1961
2 unknown BEF 1900 BEF 1900

Orphia Ann Keeling was born on 7 Aug 1869 in TN (almost certainly in Franklin County), died on 7 May 1933 in Brownwood, Brown County, TX, and is buried at Indian Creek Cemetery in that county, according to her death certificate and her grave marker [the findagrave.com photo is missing from the web site]. She married Andrew Bernhart OLSON [7 Jan 1862 - 19 Oct 1911; buried Indian Creek Cemetery] on 14 Feb 1889 in Brown County. There is one unresolved discrepancy in the records. On Andrew's death certificate he is listed as married. On Orphia's death certificate she is listed as divorced from Mr. Andrew Olson, with Andrew crossed off and "Disc" written over it. The informant on the latter was Ernest Olson, their son. The marriage records for Brown County also list a marriage of Mrs. O. A. Olson to J. B. Tyndall in 1913.

William P. Keeling was born on 25 Oct 1871 in AR, died on 19 Dec 1934 in San Antonio, Bexar County, TX, according to his death certificate. He is buried at Laurel Land Cemetery in Dallas, Dallas County, TX, according to his Dallas [TX] Morning News obituary. He married Lena Louise HONIG [3 Feb 1881 - 8 Mar 1931; Laurel Land] on 15 May 1900 in Llano County, TX.

John Jay Keeling was born on 26 Feb 1877 in TX, died on 18 Nov 1964 in Brownwood, Brown County, TX, and was buried at Santa Anna Cemetery in Coleman County, TX. He married Sefronia Ann "Fronie" LEE [8 Apr 1888 - 23 Sep 1976; buried Santa Anna] on 28 Dec 1904 in Brown County, TX. Their cemetery marker is shown on findagrave.com.

Maude Keeling was born on 6 Jun 1879 in Elkin, TX, died on 20 Dec 1974 in Farmers Branch, Dallas County, TX, and was buried at Sparkman-Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas, according to her death certificate. Her given name is often spelled Maud. She married William Pinckney LANFORD [22 Apr 1875 - Jan 1964; buried Sparkman-Hillcrest] on 7 Apr 1901 in Brown County, TX.

Georgia Keeling was born on 10 Oct 1881 in TX, died on 25 Jan 1974 in Dallas, Dallas County, TX, and is buried there at Laurel Land Memorial Park [photo on findagrave.com]. She married Robert B. HANLEY [1875 - 4 Apr 1917; buried Regency] on 21 Jan 1911 in Brown County, TX. She next married Newton William LATHAM [11 Jun 1882 - 13 Jul 1933; buried Rice Cemetery] on 19 Jul 1922 in Dallas County, TX. Both her death certificate and Dallas [TX] Morning News obituary list her name as Georgia BOUNDS, as does the SSDI. I have not located Mr. BOUNDS.

Don Carlos Keeling was born on 15 Mar 1884 in Brown County, TX, died on 25 Dec 1923 in Brownwood, Brown County, TX, and was buried there at Greenleaf Cemetery. He married Lillie Jane LEE [17 Jan 1886 - 26 May 1969; buried Bangs] on 26 Sep 1905 in Brown County. His death certificate lists him as divorced, although he was married in 1920. Lillie later married E. L. HOSIER. Her grave marker is shown on findagrave.com.

Margie Keeling was born on 7 Jul 1886 in TX, died on 13 Aug 1977 in Grand Prairie, Tarrant County, TX, and was buried at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Dallas, TX, according to her death certificate and the SSDI (the DC states birth on 6 Jul). She married Robert Cleveland SIMMONS [22 Jul 1884 - 20 Oct 1935; buried Laurel Land] on 16 Sep 1916 in Plainview, Denton County, TX, according to his Denton [TX] Record-Chronicle obituary. She next married B. L. POLLARD on 11 Jun 1940 in Dallas County, TX. He is likely Benjamin Louie POLLARD [14 Oct 1879 - 7 Sep 1959; buried Laurel Land], but I have no direct proof.

Ida Keeling was born on 7 Aug 1888 in Elkins, TX, died on 12 Sep 1979 in Tarrant County, TX, and is buried there at Oakwood Cemetery, according to her death certificate. She married Cornelius W. "Will" PENNINGTON [29 Dec 1893 - 11 Oct 1970; buried Moore Memorial] ABT 1927. Her 1930 census listing indicates that she had first married ABT 1913, but no marriage has been found.

Word Lee Keeling was born on 13 Sep 1891 in Indian Creek, Brown County, TX, died on 25 Dec 1961 in Gustine, Comanche County, TX, and is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, according to his death certificate and WWI draft card. He married Maude Lee EVANS [21 Apr 1895 - 23 Jan 1989; buried Evergreen] on 20 Sep 1913 in Brown County, TX. Their grave marker is shown on findagrave.com.

Two unknown children were born and died before 1900, according to the 1900 and 1910 census listings for Martha Ann Keeling. The five-year gap between William P. and John Jay is the most likely period. Nothing else is known.

(3) ROBERT LEONARD KEELING was born on 24 Oct 1849 in GA, died on 1 Jan 1914 in Mexia, Limestone County, TX, and is buried at Wortham Cemetery in Freestone County, TX. He married Amanda Melvina "Mandy" SNIDER [29 Jul 1854 - 26 Apr 1938; buried Wortham] on 20 Dec 1872 in Nevada County AR. Their joint marker is shown on findagrave.com. She was the sister of Martha SNIDER who married Joseph Washington Keeling (see below). Her obituary in the Dallas [TX] Morning News stated that she was a native of New Albany, MS. Census records indicate that Amanda had eight children, of whom one died before 1900. A long article by Willie Mae Keeling BEAVER in "The History of Limestone County, Texas" was devoted to this family. It stated that the family moved to Wortham, TX in 1894 by train from Nevada County, AR.

The children of Robert Leonard and Amanda Melvina SNIDER Keeling were:

Thomas Arthur Keeling 17 Oct 1873 31 Jul 1951
Ivy M. 20 Nov 1875 19 Sep 1898
William Joseph 1 Mar 1878 3 Jun 1934
Cathrine Norvelle CALAME 9 May 1880 26 Apr 1940
Edward Alford 19 Aug 1882 12 Jun 1952
Dola STRANGE 22 Jul 1886 9 Feb 1975

Thomas Arthur Keeling was born on 17 Oct 1873 in Rosston, Nevada County, AR [spelled Rawleton in his DC], died on 31 Jul 1951 in Mexia, Limestone County, TX, and is buried at Wortham Cemetery in Freestone County, TX, according to his death certificate. He married Pearl Cora MALONE [23 Mar 1878 - 31 Mar 1911; buried White Cemetery] on 28 Jan 1895 in Nevada County, AR. Her marker in Navarro County, TX is shown on findagrave.com. Her death certificate and marker give month of birth as Mar, while the 1900 census says May. He later married Ethel Lillian ALSOBROOK [6 Aug 1891 - 21 Feb 1967; buried Wortham] on 25 Jan 1912 in Navarro County, TX. Her marker shared with Thomas is shown on findagrave.com.

Ivy M. Keeling was born on 20 Nov 1875 in AR, died on 19 Sep 1898 in TX, and is buried at White Cemetery in Navarro County, TX (marker shown on findagrave.com and teafor2.com). No marriage record was found and he was presumed to be single.

William Joseph Keeling was born on 1 Mar 1878 in AR, died on 3 Jun 1934 in Dallas, Dallas County, TX, and is buried at Wortham Cemetery in Freestone County, TX. His death certificate lists his middle name as Jefferson, although all other information (including the birth records of his children and his WWI draft card) lists his name as Joseph. He married Sally Lee MURPHY [11 Sep 1890 - 4 Jun 1948; buried Wortham] on 28 Oct 1920 in Navarro County, TX. She had previously married a CRAIG. All of the markers are shown on findagrave.com.

Dola Keeling was born on 22 Jul 1886 in Waldo, AR, died on 9 Feb 1975 in Fairfield, Freestone County, TX, and was buried at Wortham Cemetery, according to her death certificate. Ethel Lee Keeling was born on 6 Apr 1889 in AR, died on 27 Aug 1913 in Wortham, Limestone County, TX, and was buried there at Wortham Cemetery, according to her death certificate. She married Robert Benjiman "Ben" CALAME [27 Mar 1887 - 8 May 1974; buried Wortham] on 14 Apr 1907 in Limestone County, TX. He later married Pearl Louise CAMPBELL. Markers for all three are shown on findagrave.com.

James Espy KEELING was born on 3 Mar 1891 in Waldo, AR, died on 12 Apr 1970 in Henderson, Rusk County, TX, and was buried there at Rusk County Memorial Gardens, according to his death certificate and WWI draft card. He married Gladys Vera KELLY [24 Jun 1896 - 17 Nov 1972; buried Memorial Gardens] on 16 Nov 1913 in Navarro County, TX.

She married James Warren HONEA [26 Feb 1849 - 22 Aug 1885; buried Elkins] on 18 Aug 1867 in Habersham County, GA. All eight of her children were alive in 1900 and 1910 according to census records. Cemetery markers for both are shown on findagrave.com. Photocopies of the J. W. and Mary Jane Keeling HONEA family bible records and the John Wellington and Mary Emma Honea STINSON family bible records are on file at the D.A.R. Library. They give the full names, dates of birth, and most of the dates of death for the entire family.

The children of James Warren and Mary Jane KEELING Honea were:

Her given names are spelled Lue Jeaney in the Honea bible, Lew Genia in the Stinson bible, Lue Genie on her death certificate, and Lou Genie on her cemetery marker, which is shown on findagrave.com. I have chosen to use the latter.

Alice Ada Honea was born on 5 Sep 1877 in Clark County, AR, died on 25 Aug 1968 in Brownwood, Brown County, TX, and is buried there at Greenleaf Cemetery, according to her death certificate and the family bible. (5) JOSEPH WASHINGTON KEELING was born on 1 Mar 1857 in GA (according to his cemetery marker and census records), died on 15 Sep 1928 in Camp County, TX, and is buried there at Macedonia Cemetery, according to a listing in a Camp County funeral register and his Pittsburg [TX] News obituary. No death certificate was found. He married Martha C. SNIDER [<7 Jul 1859> - <21 Jun 1880>; buried <Mt. Olive Cemetery> in Nevada County, AR], who was the sister of Amanda SNIDER (see Robert Leonard Keeling, above), on 31 Aug 1876 in Nevada County, AR. He later married Martha Cornelia STOTT [1 Dec 1865 - 8 Apr 1950; buried Macedonia] on 2 Feb 1882 in Nevada County, AR. If Martha C. SNIDER died in 1880, it is very likely that she had only the first three children in the list below. The 1910 census lists 8 of 10 children of Martha Cornelia STOTT as living.

The children of Joseph Washington Keeling, Martha C. SNIDER Keeling, and Martha Cornelia STOTT Keeling were:

Emma Regina Keeling was born on 1 Apr 1877 in AR, died on 3 Jul 1971 in Blaine County, OK, and is buried at Binger Cemetery in Caddo County, OK, according to her death certificate. She married John Landford EPTON [10 Aug 1875 - 14 May 1951; buried Binger] on 28 Nov 1897 in Hempstead County, AR. He married Mary Della MATHEWS [Mar 1886 - 1964; buried Murfreesboro] on 26 Nov 1905 in Howard County, AR. Their joint cemetery marker is shown on findagrave.com. Her first name is based only on her age, family name, and proximity to Mine Creek Twp. in Hempstead County, AR in the 1900 census records (and could be wrong).

Lou Tela Keeling was born on 22 Dec 1885 in AR, died on 26 Oct 1967 in Howard County, AR, and was buried at Ozan Cemetery in Hempstead County, AR, according to the SSDI and the HCAC. She married Thomas McDuffie GOODWIN [23 Dec 1882 - 26 Jun 1962; buried Ozan] on 25 Aug 1904 in Hempstead County, AR.

George Richard Keeling was born on 22 Aug 1887 in Rosston, Nevada County, AR, died on 26 Jan 1964 in Talco, Titus County, TX, and was buried at Midway Cemetery in Daphne, Franklin County, TX, according to his death certificate and WWI draft card. Sam Houston] ABT 1925, and later divorced. She subsequently married Lowell Clifton INCE. Cemetery markers are shown on findagrave.com.

Jewel Tillman Keeling was born on 19 Nov 1897 in AR, died on 31 Mar 1988 in Titus County, TX, and was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Camp County, TX, according to the SSDI, TDI, and his obituary in the Pittsburg [TX] Gazette. He married Fannie HACKLER [ABT 1904 - <6 Aug 1926>] on 17 Oct 1918 in Titus County, TX. He married Ruby Aline THOMAS [16 Aug 1909 - 30 Jan 2006; cremated] ABT 1928. She married Isaac K. "Ikey" DORFMAN [4 Mar 1900 - 25 Jul 1946; buried Rose Hill] on 14 May 1921 in Titus County, TX. His WWI draft card listed no middle name or initial. Her full middle name was supplied by a descendant.

Two unknown children were born and died BEF 1900, according to the 1900 and 1910 census listings for Martha Cornelia STOTT Keeling. The 6-year gap between George and Effie is the most likely time of birth. Nothing else is known.

(6) ELIZABETH MELVINA KEELING was born on 2 Apr 1860 in GA, died on 14 Oct 1918, and was buried at Ozan Cemetery in Hempstead County, AR next to her daughter and son-in-law, according to the HCAC. No death certificate was located. Her cemetery listing says 2 Aug 1863, but the 1860 census taken on 8 Aug lists her as 3 months old. The 1900 census also listed Aug 1860, but appears to be Apr overwritten with Aug. Since Aug is impossible, the Apr date was chosen. She married Drayton Watson STOTT [Apr 1858 - BEF 1920] on 7 Jul 1878 in Nevada County, AR. His name and dates are a synthesis of several threads of evidence, and some aspects might be incorrect. His parents were Eldred C. and Mary Stott, living in 1860 in Franklin County, GA with Draton W., 2 years old. Eldred died in 1862 in the Civil War at the Battle of Malvern Hill, and Mary applied in Franklin County for the unpaid money due him. Eldred had served in Co. H of the 24th Ga. Vol. Inf. under Capt. G. W. Keeling, the uncle of Elizabeth Melvina. John W. Stott filed an affidavit in support of her claim. In 1870 John W. Stott and family were living in Franklin County, TN next to Lewis M. Keeling (John W. was the father of Mary Jane Stott, who married Lewis M. Keeling - see (1) above). Living with the Stotts was Darton Watson [14 years old - Watson was listed as his surname]. Given the relative rareness of the name Drayton, the Keeling connection, and his age it is likely that "Drayton Watson" were actually the given names of Eldred's son Drayton W. Stott. Note, however, that I have no other evidence of this. The 1900 census lists his date of birth as Apr 1856, which is consistent with the 1870 census, but the 1860 and 1880 censuses are consistent with Apr 1858 as the date of birth, and the latter was chosen because the earliest census age is more likely to be correct. He was not found after 1910, and no death certificate was located.

The children of Drayton Watson and Elizabeth Melvina KEELING Stott were:

Ola Mae HILE 25 Nov 1887 16 Oct 1969
unknown BEF 1900 BEF 1900
unknown 1900-1910 1900-1910

An unknown child was born and died BEF 1900, according to the 1900 census listing for Elizabeth Melvina Keeling STOTT. Nothing else is known.

An unknown child was born and died between 1900 and 1910, according to the 1910 census listing for Elizabeth Melvina Keeling STOTT. Nothing else is known.

(7) SARAH EMMA KEELING was born on 8 Sep 1865 in GA, died on 18 Oct 192-, and was buried at Doyle Church Cemetery in Hempstead County, AR, according to the HCAC. Her cemetery marker apparently could not be completely read, and the year of her death was not determined. No death certificate was found. She married Henry Deshay SHADDOX [29 Feb 1852 GA - 14 Apr 1937; buried Doyle] on 28 Dec 1882 in Nevada County, AR. He had been previously married. Although the official Arkansas death index lists the day of death as 17 Apr, the actual death certificate, the HCAC, and his Nashville [AR] News obituary say 14 Apr.

The children of Henry Deshay and Sarah Emma KEELING Shaddox were:

Louis Madison Shaddox was born on 20 Jul 1892 in Prescott, Nevada County, AR, died on 18 Jun 1926 in Little Rock, Pulaski County, AR, and was buried there at the State Hospital Cemetery, according to his death certificate and WWI draft card. YARBROUGH [1868 - 11 Jun 1949; buried Avery's Chapel] on 1 Oct 1924 in Howard County, AR. His cemetery marker and that of his first wife are shown on findagrave.com. She married John Alfred STUEART [11 Jul 1899 - 21 Oct 1980; buried Mt. Tabor] on 5 Sep 1927 in Pike County, AR. His family name is spelled Stueart on the SSDI and the marriage record, but Stewart on their cemetery markers and his WWI draft card.

Willie Othel Shaddox was born on 9 Dec 1903 in AR, died on 1 Jul 1977 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, LA, and was buried at Mt. Tabor Cemetery in Pike County, AR, according to his Magnolia [AR] Banner obituary. His obituary states that he was born in Belton [Bell County] TX, but the census records state AR. He married Mack SANDFORD [5 Jul 1905 - 17 Apr 1967; buried Mt. Tabor] on 2 Nov 1919 in Howard County, AR. According to one Internet account "Mack" was a nickname and her given names were <Ollie Ethel>. Their cemetery markers are shown on findagrave.com.
