KEELING OF VIRGINIA AND KENTUCKY

This account should be taken strictly as incomplete and unconfirmed. It is a combination of information from various researchers, little of which was given with reference to specific documents and should be considered only as a guide to a final or proven genealogy. To what was given by various researchers I have added information from U.S. censuses and from Washington Co., Ky. marriage and cemetery records.

Biography of Benjamin Fowler Keeling.(In Vol. I, pp. 338-41, A History of Kentucky Baptists, by Spencer)
Benjamin Fowler Keeling succeeded Joel Gordon as pastor of Deep Creek Church. He was a preacher of fine abilities and was very popular. He was one of the leading ministers of the Baptist Association, before which he preached the introductory sermon on four occasions, and of which he was moderator six years.
He was born of very poor, but pious and respectable Baptist parents in Washington county, and, although in very lowly circumstances, was respected as a man of piety. He occasionally engaged in public exhortation. His son was brought to labor on a rented farm during "crop time."The remainder of the year he "hired out" to work by the day or monthly, to aid in the support of his father's family. He, however, possessed a sprightly mind and managed to learn to read and write. In his youth he professed conversion and was baptized into Rockbridge church by Elijah Summers, who had raised up this church in the northern part of Washington Co.
Young Keeling soon began to pray and exhort in public, and the church licensed him to preach. His efforts were quite acceptable, and he gave indications of usefulness. But on being appointed constable he gave himself to secular pursuits. He soon became involved in a difficulty about some business trifle and was excluded from the church.Being a very popular young man, a considerable part of the church adhered to him. This party set up a claim to being a church, and Mr. Keeling was induced to accept an irregular ordination and became its pastor.Of this imprudent step, however, he soon repented and was restored to the fellowship of Rockbridge Church.
About this time he was married to Rebecca, daughter of John Gordon, and niece of that eminently godly minister of Christ, Joel Gordon. She was a Baptist and a devoted Christian woman, and made him a good wife. The fruits of this marriage were seven sons and three daughters, most of whom, like the children of Job, have given themselves to feasting, rather than to godliness.
In 1840 Mr. Keeling was ordained to the pastoral care of Salem Church (into the recent constitution of which he had entered) by John Dean, Joel Gordon, David Bruner, and Reuben Searcy. He was soon afterwards called to the care of Deep Creek, Glen's Creek, and Rockbridge church. He was also supply for several other churches at different periods.
After laboring several years in this field with a good degree of success, he moved to Illinois, where he remained one year. But being dissatisfied with the country, he returned to his old field of labor in Kentucky.
Soon after returning from Illinois, he was elected justice of the peace. But finding this office incompatible with his ministerial duties, he resigned the magistracy at the expiration of two years and now gave himself more earnestly and consistently to the work of the ministry. He was a good business man, a little inclined to worldly ambition in his youth, and not indifferent about money-making.He was a good economist and early acquired property; was very popular with the world, as well as the church, and the way to local fame was open before him.He had a hard struggle with the world. But finally the grace of God overcame. His fine gifts were at last consecrated to his holy calling. His success, both in building up the churches and in leading sinners to Christ, was abundant. He rose rapidly in the estimation of his brethren, and in a short time was the most popular preacher in his association."Whosoever honoreth me," said the blessed Savior, "him will my Father honor."But Mr. Keeling did not long enjoy his honor among the brethren or pursue his course of usefulness. His work on earth was soon done.He died of typhoid fever July 27, 1854.
In doctrine Mr. Keeling was moderately Calvinistic, but urged all men to repent and believe the gospel. His address was tender and pathetic, and often he wept profusely, while dwelling on the love of God, or the suffering of Christ. He addressed the hearts of the people with great power. His congregations were often bathed in tears, and the Lord added many souls to his ministry.

Notes on the ancestry of Julia A. Kays,
wife of Paschal Colvin and mother of Sarah Colvin who married Henry Keeling
Nancy Noel, born 15 Sept. 1803, died 10 Nov. 1875, was the wife of Solomon Kays and the mother of Julia A. Kays. She was the daughter of Muscoe Noel, b. ca. 1771, m. 1792, Elizabeth Smith.Muscoe Noel was the son of Thomas Noel and Drucilla, thought by some to be a Smithers.(Nancy's husband Solomon Kays was the son of George Kays, who married Mary Huffman, daughter of Frederick Huffman in 1795.)
Muscoe Noel's name points strongly to his being a part of the Noel family of Essex Co., Virginia and a descendant of the Garnett and Muscoe families of Essex Co.
The Noels have been extensively researched by Jennie N. Weeks of Utah, and a copy of her research is in the library of the D.A.R. in Washington.(At least one edition of her work was entitled Book of Remembrance.)The Noels came to America from Holland.Because of the spelling of their name, they were long thought to be of French origin.A great many French Protestants (Huguenots) took refuge in the Netherlands in the time before the settlement of America. This supposition of French origin has proved to be incorrect. This family is descended from Nowe Passchier (and wife Stinjtje Jaspers) of Halwijn, Flanders. He married on 19 March 1583 in Leiden and had a son Jacob, born about 1599, who married Treintje Cornelisdr in 1621 in Leiden.(It should be understood that at this time the Dutch did not have surnames as we know them today, but followed their first name with a form of the father's first name with a suffix added. In principle, this is like calling John, the son of a man named David, John Davidson.Jacob's son Cornelis, born 8 Nov. 1623, died June 1699, came to Virginia and married Elizabeth Page of Essex Co.There he became known as Cornelius Noel.Among his sons was a James, born about 1680 in Essex Co., who married Elizabeth Evans and died testate in about 1741 (will written 17 Apr. 1741).Because of the names of his sons Muscoe and Garnett, Thomas Noel, who married Drucilla and died in Mercer Co., Ky. in 1789, is thought to be the son of Richard Noel and Mary Garnett, this Richard being the son of James Noel and Elizabeth Evans, mentioned above.
Mary Garnett was the daughter of James Garnett, born 1692, died 1765, and his second wife, Elizabeth Muscoe.James Garnett was the son of John Garnett and Ann, and Elizabeth was the daughter of Salvator Muscoe Jr., 1674-1741, the son of Salvator Muscoe Sr.The latter is said to have been an Italian stone mason brought to London to take part in the rebuilding of the city after the great fire of 1666.He is said to have lived in London on Monmouth St., St. Giles in the Fields.By 1692 he was a resident of Gloucester Co., Va.Besides his son Salvator, he had a daughter Elizabeth, who also married a Garnett - Thomas Garnett. The Garnetts from whom the Noels descend were the branch which built the great mansion "Elmwood" in Essex Co. in 1774.The Garnetts were also supporters of Vauter's (sometimes spelled Vawter's) Church in Essex Co., a historical landmark.

Land Grants
In the early days of settlement in Virginia, the English granted "headright" land to those who brought other settlers over and paid their way.Typically one received 50 acres for each settler that he brought to America. These were what have sometimes been called indentured servants. They worked for so many years for the person who paid their way and then they were granted land themselves. They were not, however, necessarilyservants in the sense that people understand that term today. They were simply working off their debt to the one who paid their way.In fact, some of these so-called servants later became wealthy men themselves. Here are some examples of this sort of thing with respect to the Noels and Muscoes.
