Thomas Keene and Mary Thorley of Northumberland 1650
Dear Keene Researchers,
My twin and I are thinking outside our normal parameters, and have come up with some hunches about Mary (Thorley), believed wife of Thomas Keene and their possible family connections.
In Mary (Thorley) Keene-Reynor-Broughton’s will (2 Jan 1662) she mentions her children by name, and adds a bequest to Elizabeth Perry. We think this Elizabeth is Mary’s niece, daughter of her possible sister. Here is what leads us to that thought…
Jane (Thorley) Bashaw-Perry’s will names dau. Jane (Bashaw), dau. Margaret (Bashaw), son William (Bashaw), dau. Elizabeth (Perry), son Andrew (Perry). (Inventory signed by Wm Reynolds, Tho Keene, Phil Carpenter, Fran Simmons) on 3 Mar 1650(Jane’s second marriage was probably to Edmond Perry c.1642, listed along with Tho Keene as living in Virginia 20 April, 1636 with George Evelin)
[Per the book, Perry of London, there was an Edmund Perry, b. 1599, d. 1655, son of Henry Pery and Richarda Platyr. This Edmund established the Pery family of Limerick and was a brother of William Pery of the Virginia Council (1592-1637). We also know that the Elizabeth Gosnold presumed, yet unproven mother of this Thomas Keene was cousin to Anthony Gosnold & Bartholemew Gosnold, captain of the ship Godspeed, and member of the Virginia Council.
We also see that a Jane Bashaw, [orphan of Giles Bashaw (d. Kent MD c.1640) & Jane (Thorley)] married Abraham Joyce (bef. Feb. 1650 and 20 Sep 1658).They have a dau, Jane Joyce who married John Garner (c. 1679) son of John Garner and Suzanna Keene (dau of Mary (Thorley) & Tho Keene. So, if these women were possible sisters, then the granddaughter of Jane (Thorley) married grandson of Mary (Thorley). Robert K. Headley, the author of Married Well and Often: Marriages of the Northern Neck of Virginia 1649-1800, also indicated Abraham Joyce might have married (2) Jane Bashaw’s sister Elizabeth Perry c. 1658, and Elizabeth Perry may have married (2) a Steadham, and he referenced will of John Garner (though I cannot find this will). But, Elizabeth Perry was possibly still single, and thus named, at the writing of Mary Broughton’s will, proved in 1662.
April 16, 1661, Thomas Keene son of Thomas Keene, received a bequest from his godfather, Francis Simmons. He was not of age in 1665 for we find on May 5, 1665, 'it is ordered ye division be made of ye belongings of ye orphans of Thomas Keene by Mr Thomas Mathews, Mr Nicholas Owen, John Tingey and George Courtnell being first Sworn by ye justice, and ye part belonging to Thomas Keene ye son of Thomas Keene deceased, be deposited into the hands of John Garner, his guardian.' (North. O.B. 2, p. 414)
Mary Thorley’s maiden name is inferred from a will of Edward Thorley of Anne Arundel County, Maryland [Md . Cal. Wills, Vol. 1, p. 212], dated Dec 1678, probated 10 Feb 1678/9, believed to be her brother. In it, he bequests to his "Cousin Thomas Keene".NOTE: At that time, the use of Cousin would refer most likely to a Nephew, just as the term Nephew often referred to a Grandson. This terminology is established by genealogists, derived from common use in family wills where the relation was well documented.Plus it is believed that Thomas Keene moved to Maryland, with his family, to live near this uncle.
Edward Thorley, Mary (Thorley) Keene, and Jane (Thorley) Bashaw might all have been children of Thomas Thorley killed in the massacre at the colony of Jamestown VA in 1622.As well, Thomas Keene might have been a brother, nephew or cousin to Lt Richard Kean killed in the same location of Martin’s Hundred.
Thomas Keene sponsored the following head-rights to Maryland, presumably people he knew in England:

Headrights were Thomas Orley (twice), Archibald Read, Thomas Watson, Margaret Browne, John Earle and wife, Thomas Keene,(Mary Simmons is John Earle’s wife.) Mary Keene and William Keene.
This Patent was belated recorded after the death of Thomas Keene and renewed March 18, 1662.
So, in looking for connections of the people who were headrights of Thomas Keene, we traced back to England, and found the following:
Richard Symonds married Elnor Keane, 30 Jan 1613, Berkshire England:Book Burials vol. 3, Register of MarriagesBerkshire England 1538-1837.(Elnor Keane may be a relative of Thomas Keene of Thrandeston, presumed father of Thomas Keene immigrant to MD and VA)
Giles Symonds of Hillsley (former owner of Woddesfford Castle, West Stafford co. Dorset, elder brother of Thomas, as castle named in his estate d. 22 Dec 1612, bequeathed to relic Ann, then mentioned in litigation 1614 as belonging to their son Thomas, ref in Eng Families of New England Immigrants, Vol II, pg.160), married Anne Browne, sister of Sir John Browne (she was dau of Tamasine Warham and John Browne (Esquire) and they have the following children listed below: Robert, Ann, Edward, & Thomas.
Robert Symonds, counselor at law, married Elizabeth Rogers, of Hadnipp, dau. Of Richard Rogers of Bristow.Their 3 known children are listed below:
----Matthew Simmons b. 1619
----Francis Simmons
----Anne Symonds
Ann Simmons m. Richard Sankey
Edward Simmons married Eliz Petty
Thomas Simmons married Margaret Middleton (dau of Robert Middleton) and had a daughter:
----Mary Symonds b. 1618 Gloucestershire who was first wife of (Sir) John Earle b. 1612, married in Sumerset England, before leaving across the sea.
NOTE: Giles Symonds and his descendants coat (of arms), viz., (distinguishing him from other Symonds of Dorsett, mistakenly documented as kin, but since unequivocally disproved.)
Argent, a bend engrailed between two fire falls proper, and in 1596 Dethick, Garter King-of-Arms, granted to Giles Symonds as a crest:A Moor’s arm tied with a scarf, in the hand a fire ball. In this grant Giles is described as son of Thomas Symonds of West Stafford, co. Dorsett.

As a final point, I want to list an accounting of the Keene’s family connection to Welholme manor of Thrandeston, from an on-line book of Suffolk holdings, keeping in mind that Mary (Thorley) Keene married (2) Henry Reynor (also a very early immigrant). Please, be mindful that Davy’s research, housed in the British Museum Library archives, is NOT infallible:
Thrandeston, 390.
Manor of Welholme's.
In 1507 Margaret Woodhall died seised of this manor, when it passed to her son and heir, Richard Woodhall. It seems then to have gone in fourths, and we find four fines levied of the manor between 1546 and 1550. The first was by Robert Kene against Robert Berkeley,' the second was by
Robert Kene against Richard Breyne, and others,'" the third was by John Lane against Richard Poderych," the fourth was in 1550 by Robert Kene against Anne Reyner, widow."
The manor, according to Davy, subsequently vested in Edmund Bedingfield, and from him passed to his son and heir, Thomas Bedingfield, who died in 1590, when it passed to his son and heir, Henry Bedingfield; but Davy also more correctly makes Robert Keene, of Thrandeston, lord,
and states that in 1558 and in another place that he died in 1565.'^ The manor then, Davy states, passed to Robert's son and heir, John Keene.
This may be so, but in 1590 Thomas Keene would appear to have had the lordship, for this year we meet with a fine levied of the manor against him by William Duncan'* ; and seven years later another fine levied against the said Thomas Keene by W. Kellam.'^ John Keene was dead by 1593.
By the opening of the 17th century, the manor had vested in the Smith family.'* Richard Smith, of Carlton Road, Norfolk, 5th son of Richard Smith, of Bacton, and Elizabeth his wife, daughter of John...

dancette Arg., 3 cross crosslets Sa. ; (or) Or, a chevron engrailed Gu.

Anyone want to pipe in here?We would love some new dialogue. We still have more documentation and new ideas to post at a later date regarding more Keene connections.
