Since posting yesterday's message, I find I was looking in the wrong book! William Alden Keep is listed on the 1851 census as a 35 year old tailor, born in London and employing two men. . Susannah, his wife was 35, born in Swanage, Dorset. Although William was born in London, there had been tailors called Keep living in the Biggleswade area since at least 1570, so he was probably a descendant of that family. Since he was born in 1816, he could not be the son of William Keep, born 1805. That William had an uncle, also called William, who was baptised in 1774 in Northill, which is near Biggleswade. Perhaps he was William Alden's father.

Best wishes

Philip Keep
