This information on the SS Argo passengers relates to my gt gt gt Grandparents John 1824-1905 & Elizabeth c1827-1918[nee Ayers ] KEEP who having married in Newport Pagnell, Bucks (of the Keeps of Wellingborough, Northants & later Birmingham) in 1850 steamed in 1853 on the ARGO to Australia to join his sister [Elizabeth ?] Jane 182? - 1909 died Bowral NSW nee Keep & Frederick Parsons died 1885 (Warehouseman & Mayor of Leichhardt) who had come out in 1850 , ? with his brother Charles Joseph Keep [F Parsons & CJ Keep recorded in Fords Directory Sydney 1851 CJK who it seems went back to England at this time or before? maybe he came 1848?] >
John K established his wholesale ironmongery business later John Keep & Sons to become in 1927 Keep MacPherson 's Hardware Merchants { which was in the building now The Estalishment formerly George Patterson Building in George St, Sydney } The Firm originally was in Barrack St then had other premises at 104-108 Sussex St Keep House demolished & in Broughton House extant on cnr King Clarence & Kent Sts in Sydney.
He & his family ( arrived in 1853, eldest dau Mary Jane 'Polly " [later Mrs Richard Anderson] ,( another son ?listed may have died young as my gtgt gf Walter John Keep was born Balmain 1854), servant & cow, residing initially ? George St then from 1854 at Duke Place, Balmain {Next to his sometime business partner Frederick Geard}.
As the family & business grew they moved in 1864 to Broughton Hall , Leichhardt, now under threat as part of Rozelle Hospital -Callan Park.
At the same time in 1853 John Keep's cousin Edward Keep came to Melbourne aslo in Hardware marrying in 1862c Janet Ronald of Gibbs Ronald , Geelong & Melb. later Aust Merc Land & Finance Co family.
The families in Aust remained for long time closely connected to their relations in Birmingham, who ran Keep Bros. which began c1820 . see my other entries , further info gratefully shared.
