I have traced people with the surname Keep in England back to the period before the Domesday Book (1085). My own family can be traced back to Buckinghamshire in about 1260, but I am aware of individuals with the surname in other parts of England before then. I had been told by several people that John Keep of Longmeadow came from Sutton Coldfield near Birmingham. Other people say that he came from the Wellingborough area of Northants, which is where my own family were living in the 1620's - 1690's. However, no-one has ever offered any documentary evidence to support either of these theories.

I do not believe he emigrated from either place. A John Keep arrived in Springfield MA in 1644,so I think it is highly likely that he was the father of the John Keep mentioned in the Keep Family Society book. Some more research needs to be done at the American end before we can get any further on this side of the pond.
