There were two John Keep families in Homer, Cortland Co, NY in the early 1800's, distant cousins. The first, Judge of the county, who held the first Homer church services in his barn & whose farm today is the still standing county home, was Judge John Keep, married to Frances Goodell, sister of Lydia Goodell who married Darius Kinney & Susan Goodell who married Benjamin Knight...all came from Connecticut shortly before or after 1800 to Homer. Many of the Goodell, Kinne, Salisbury, Peck clans in Homer are related through marriage & came from CT during that time. Judge John was son of Jabez Keep & Sarah Chandler. Jabez was son of John Keep & Abigail Munn & that John Keep was son of Ensign Samuel & Sarah Colton Keep. Ensign Samuel & Sarah also had Samuel Keep who married Sarah Bement & they had Samuel who married Sabina Cooley. They had Rev. John Keep who married Lydia Hale. This Rev. Keep was a Harvard Grad, called to the Presbyterian church in Homer, NY in 1821. Rev. Keep was one of a company of ministers who met to organize the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in 1810 & in this work was not only a distant cousin, but a friend of the other Judge John Keep in Homer, who helped his friend & his wife's cousin by marriage, Rev. Alfred Bennett of First Baptist church in Homer, start Baptist churches in the area. Rev. Bennett was a good friend of Dr. Adoniram Judson, one of the first missionaries sent to Burma by the ABCFM, & Rev. Bennett was also a member of the ABCFM. In 1833 Rev. John Keep & his wife Lydia Hale moved to a church in Ohio & started Oberlin College. They had a son Theordore Keep, also a minister. Captain Caleb Keep married to Margaret Merrick was the brother of Jabez, who was the father of Judge John Keep. Captain Caleb Keep was Judge John Keep's uncle. The Caleb Keep family also lived in Homer, Cortland Co, in the early 1800's. They had Marcy, Seth, Clarissa, Martin,Joseph, Rhoda & the Honorable Chauncey Keep, who married Prudence Wolcott in Homer in 1807. Seth had Timothy Keep who married Sylvia Backus. Marcy Keep married Deacon Noah Hitchcock who are both buried in Homer. There are Many Many Keeps in Homer, Cortland Co, NY in the early 1800's & not all are from the same Keep family.
