Chapter: Bertie Co Keetrs
The Keeters first appeared in Perquimmins Precinct before 1696. Laurence Keeter was given a land grand prior to 1696. The location of this grant was the south side of the Pasquotank River. In 1716 Laurence made additional purchases of land along the same river. Laurence died between 1716 & 1730. In 1730 mention is made of the Widow Keeter's land in theChowan Precinct on the Upper end of Meherrin Neck. This is apparently the same land.
The Keeters lost their land in Perquimmans Precinct. It is not clear why the land was lost, but court records indicate financial troubles and several attempts to reclaim the land. In any event, Keeters bought several parcels of land in Bertie Co., and most of it was lost
after theCivil War. There are still Keeters in Bertie Co., NC and
contrary to popular belief, they are all related.
