My great grand-fathers name was Joseph J. Kiefer, and he was born about 1856 in Lewis County, NY. The last name has appeared in census records and newspapers as Kiefer, Kieffer, keefer, Keifer, Keiffer. I believe his father was Christian Kiefer jr,(kieffer), and his mother was Lena Kiefer (kieffer). Since there are so many variations of the spelling, it is almost impossible to track these people. I do know they (Christian and /or Joseph) came from Alsace Lorraine, as agents of Count Le Ray to help settle areas of NY. Joseph was also a furniture maker, and had his own factory, although he died not long after that (1905).

Chirtian Kieffer jrs. parents were possibly Christian Kieffer sr, and Catharine (Hershey) Kieffer (all lived in Lewis County)

If you have any information about this line I would love to hear from you. Thank you.

Virginia
