Keirs Family
I have been researching my branch a bit further and think there may be some connection with some of the other branches. Here is my line in more detail:
My great grandmother: MARTHA BOYD KEIRS born in BENQUHAT, DALMELLINGTON 1884. She was the eldest of 5 sisters and 2 brothers all born in the Dalmellington environs.
Her father was JOHN BOYD KEIRS born WARWICKHILL, DREGHORN 1861.(2 miles from where i was brought up!) HE appears to have at least 2 sisters and a younger brother DAVID who was married twice. At some point after 1865 the family move from Warwickhill to Benquhat - a small mining village above Dalmellington.
JOhn's parents were DAVID KEIRS m. MARTHA BOYD 1855 Ayr.David was born around 1836. His parents were John KEERS and AGNES CAMPBELL. According to his marraige certificate he was born in Ireland and it states that his father was a miner. However, i have found mention of a john keirs/KEERS and Agnes CAMPBELL in the OPR records. They are mentioned as being in the Loudoun Area of Kilmarnock. It is possible that they are the same people. However, why would they go to Ireland?
When David dies in 1885, his son (my great great grandfather) registers his death. This certficate states that John Keirs (spelling seems to vary drastically) was a farmer.
in 1871 a Daniel KEIRS is also mentioned as staying with DAvid and Martha in Benquhat. He is 20 and from AYr. Unfortunately the exact relationship between David and Daniel is unclear as the record simply states "relation".
My great great grandfather JOHN BOYD KEIRS was a miner and eventually became a colliery manager in Dover and Fife. His daughter MARTHA BOYD KEIRS was a schoolteacher (as am I) and died in Glasgow in the 1960s. My grandfather was her youngest son. I know there is a strong connection in ayrshire with the Keirs name - Drumgrange & Keirs. There are several places around Dalmellington with Keirs in their names. My own ancestors moved around a lot because they were miners and i know that there are still a lot of Keirs living in this area today.
It is perfectly possible that there is a connection between my branch and those in the kilmarnock area given that they are all relatively speaking the same neck of the woods.
i would be delighted to know if anyone can link onto the family i have already found.
