Joyce,
Because the Cornelius KEITH bunch lived primarily in Pickens District, SC, you don't see many researchers taking note of the extensive land speculation the father and sons were doing, late 1700s, in the eastern counties of Georgia. Asa was among them in that business, and borrowed money from my ancestor, David KEITH, which he had not paid back by 1802.
Samuel H.KEITH was born ca 1811. Asa had among his children: Talphia (b. 23 Dec 1810), and George W. in June of 1812. Not likely he would have had an additional child between those two.
Asa had a brothers named James and Washington (both born in 1760's) that we don't know anything about. John and McKey Anderson KEITH are fairly well recorded. Also rattling around Georgia in early years were two by the name of "Rememberance" or "Membrance" KEITH...one born betwen 1775 and 1794, and this one:
John KEITH (b. ca 1752) filed for pension in Putnam Co., GA, 23 Aug 1820, his papers showing the following: he enlisted with Francis MARION’s SC troops during Revolutionary War, under Captain MAZYICK, 1779; was at Savannah, and was taken prisoner after siege of Charleston for 14 months; m. 1 Aug 1832 to Nancy WARD, who was still a teen-aged girl; d. 10 Feb 1842, Twiggs Co., GA; had one child, a son, probably resultant from earlier m. 19 Jul 1809 to Ann PERRYMAN, Putnam Co., GA [A Newspaper article, concerning this marriage, says that John was “of Lincoln Co., GA” at the time he m. Ann. A John Keith was listed in Barksdale District of Lincoln County Tax digest for 1801, along with Asa and Cornelius Keith; was in Clarke Co., tax digest for 1804.]; his original service papers were destroyed in a fire at his house in Darlington, SC. Nancy, remarried 1845 to William SMITH. In 1854 Nancy, living in Twiggs Co., GA, applied for pension as John’s widow, and submitted affidavit witnessed by James Elbert KENT and a John KEITH [a John (b. 1833) is shown in 1850, Twiggs Co., living with Samuel and Sarah MATHEWS family]. In a separate affidavit, Kent says that he married the daughter of John Keith’s wife(?) in the year 1841. One known child:
(1) Membrance KEITH (b. ca 1811) was in Bibb Co., GA in 1850, along with a John KEITH (b. ca 1809, Ire?). [A Membrance Keith (b. between 1775 and 1794) is shown in Hall Co., GA in 1820 census, as head of household with two older women, and two younger males and one female. Also, there is record of “Memram” KEITH m. 20 Apr 1818 to Nancy McCOY, Franklin Co., GA.]
