Hi Marion,
The John Kelly of Newbury, MA and father of a daughter named Sarah, about whom you inquired, was my 8-great grand father.Several writers have mentioned him in their books. The most extensive writings about him were in a book by Giles M. Kelly:"A Genealogical Account of the Descendants of John Kelly of Newbury, MA. USA", first published in 1886.Your library may have - or could borrow for you - a copy. It's must-reading if you are a descendant.
Briefly:John Kelly was born in England and emigrated to the colonies in 1633 (says one writer) from Newbury, Berks, England (most say) but he may have had an Exeter, Devon connection. He became a First Settler of Newbury, MA in 1635, married at some point (wife's name not known) and died in December, 1644, leaving three children, Sarah, Mary and John (my line)...and presumably a widow. Sarah married Thomas Burkby/Burpee;Mary married John Belconger/Conger and John married Sarah Knight. The immigrant was a husbandman and, uh, apparently a maverick. I urge you to try to get a copy of Giles Kelly's book and copy portions of interest to you.
Clifton Kelley
