JULIA NEWMAN KELLY, IRELAND
Am trying to find any link to my Ireland ancestors. Julia Newman (b. abt 1790?), married ??? Kelly in Co. Cork, maybe near Castletown, near Berehaven - marr. abt 1820?; they had 3 children that I know of: Mary (b. in Cluin (now Allihies Village) abt 1820; Connie (b. abt 1838 in Castletownbere), and Mike (b. 1839, Castletownbere).
Julia's daughter Mary (b. abt 1820) married Daniel John (Caobach) Harrington in 1842 in Allihies Church - witnesses were Denis Quill and John Kelly.
Mary and Daniel had 5 children before her husband died abt 1858/1860. One child, Margaret, may have died in infancy, abt 1849. The remaining children, all of whom went to the US (but not at the same time), were Mary, Peter Daniel, John Daniel, and Ellen.
Family notes in Illinois say that after her husband's death, she "was forced to leave Ireland".
Julia's daughter, Mary (Nan) Kelly/Kelley Harrington (Caobach) had left her two young sons Peter D & Johnny D with Julia while Mary (Nan) came to the US with her two daughters (Mary & Ellen), to work in Boston, MA as housemaids/domestics, until she could settle somewhere & send for her sons.
Julia Newman Kelly/Kelley would have been "babysitting", possibly in CA, possibly in Co. Cork, for two grandsons - Peter Daniel and John Daniel Harrington - for about 5 years - from 1858/60 through 1865.
Julia's sons, Connie Kelly & Mike Kelly went to the US (Hancock MI, Houghton Co.) about 1860-1864? to work in the mines. They each married - Mike to Norah ??, and Connie to ?? (Mike & Norah had no children; Connie & his wife had a daughter Mary, who came to live with the Harrington relatives who had emigrated from Co. Cork to central IL - many Harrington's are living (and buried) here!)
When Mary Kelly Harrington & her daughter Mary & Ellen Harrington (Caobach) finally worked up enough money, they moved from MA to Hancock MI to stay with one of Mary Kelly's brother (Connie or Mike - not sure which one), and sent for her (Mary Kelly Harrington's) two sons (Peter & John - Pete & Johnny), whom she had left in the care of her mother (Julia Newman Kelly).
I have the rest of the family stories... but need the beginning, and will share!
Do any of the above events/stories ring any bells with your family archivists?
PLEASE HELP ME!!! - my mother wants to know - and she's 81 (in great shape, but still.. -
