Harry was born 6 Oct 1869 to Hugh H. and Ellen (Leonard) Kelly, natives of Ireland.Hugh Kelly came with his parents to Rochester, NY, where he was educated & became a contractor & builder. In 1860, he located to Prairie du Chien, WI, and in 1868 transferred to Omaha, NE, where he died at age 68.Ellen died at age 48.They had 8 children, Harry J. being the fourth child.
Harry attended public school in Omaha, NE, and attended Creighton University there. He worked in the newspaper offices of the Bee and the Republican-Herald in Omaha. In 1888, he moved to Leadville, CO, then Southern California, and on to Seattle, WA, working in the newspaper business.In 1889, he located to Missoula, MT, working for the Missoulian.In 1899, he was in Butte working on the Butte Miner. Returned to Missoula in 1892; subsequently, was connected with the Spokane Review for two years. In 1905, he moved to Hamilton, MT, and bought the Bitterroot Review which he owned & published about three years. Returned to Butte, MT, working on the Butte Miner; located to Lewistown & organized the Democrat News. On 1 Jul 1913, he was appointed registrar of the United States Land Office.
On 2 Aug 1899, Harry married Miss Mary See, a native of Montana.Children: Helen, Margaret, William G., Harry J., Jr.
