Brian, thanks for that information on the Kennell family. I will follow up and see what I can find about Hores Kennell. The Canneell (Kennell) I am looking for was definitely named "Moses", at least that is what is clearly written on several handwritten tax lists I have from colonial Bute County, NC.

Since sending in my query I have found that, according to November 10, 1778 court minutes for Bute County, NC, a Jean Cannell posted bond of 100 pounds to indemnify St. John's Parish for keeping her two bastard children - Salley and Betty Cannell. Thomas Jones, possibly one of my ancestors, and Joseph McGehee gave their surety for her bond. I don't know if this means that they were the fathers of the two children but it sounds like it.
