Laura Gant is listed as "adopted daughter" on the early Republic Co., KS census for William and Susannah Kephart. The county seat at Belleville KS does not offer formal adoption records on this matter. In fact, the Kepharts probably "took her in" as a common neighborly practice of the times.

Two of her brothers Calvin and Charles are also listed on the 1880 Republic Co., KS census in Scandia Twp and Union Twp respectively. There is an obvious mystery as to what happened to the parents Henry John Gant and Rachel Stipe Gant.

Laura Gant b: 28 Jan 1868 Casey, Clark Co., IL was d/o Henry John Gant and Rachel Stipe. Laura died 9 Oct 1956 at Frederick, Tillman Co., OK. She is buried at Frederick Cemetery with her husband.

Laura married James Allison "Bud" Cardwell 14 Sep 1890 at Courtland, Republic Co., KS. He was born 1868 at Johnson Co., IA to Joseph Henry Cardwell (1844-1885)and Rachel Sophia Kephart (1949-1944). Ironically, Rachel Kephart Cardwell was the daughter of William and Susannah Kephart.

Laura and "Bud" had one daughter, Pearl (1892-1980) and two boys, Eula W. (1894-?) and Bryan (?-?)

William and Susannah Kephart are my Great Great Grandparents. -- David Bays
