Sorry to be so late with reply. My grandfather, James Joseph Keppel was born in Ireland in the 1880s. I have no idea where. He came to America as a soldier in the Salvation Army with a Man Named Ballington Booth. These two, with the help of many others, split with Salvation Army and founded the Volunteers of Americe. I have James' obituary but there is no birth place. You're right, Keppel is spelled many different ways. Germans often use Koepple. My family always said theri origins were in Holland and I have discussed this in previous notices at this site.
