I am searching for more information about the Kerby/Kirby familes that once lived in the Wilkes County-Caldwell County areas. Caldwell County was formed in 1841 out of Wilkes County, so the Kerby/Kirby family once lived in Wilkes County and then in 1841 they lived in Caldwell County but stayed in the same area. They lived near the Yadkin River/Yadkin Valley area. My great-great-great grandfather was Enoch Kerby/Kirby and he is listed in the 1840 Wilkes County Census book and lived near a John Kerby/Kirby. I'm not sure if this John Kerby/Kirby who lived in the Yadkin River/Yadkin Valley township is Enoch's father or not. Enoch Kerby married a Susan Greenfield first and then married a second time to Rachel E. H. Merriman. Enoch Kerby/Kirby is listed in the 1850 Caldwell County Census book as being 36 years old and his first wife, Susan was listed as being 36 years old as well. The children who are listed below Enoch and Susan include Rachel Greenfield who was 18 years old, Rosey who was 2 years old and James Merryman who was 23 and he was a laborer. In the 1860 Caldwell County Census book, it listed Enoch Kerby/Kirby being 48 years old and his first wife, Susan as being 48 years old with the following children/people living with them, Susan Greenfrield who was 13, Manurvy who was 10, John who was 6, Louisa who was 2 and Joshua Dowel who was 7. In the 1870 Caldwell County Census book, it listed Enoch Kirby being 56 years old, his second wife, Rachel as being 45 years old, John H. Kirby being 15 years old, Elijah M. Kirby being 11 years old, Louisa J. Kirby being 9 years old, Salvadore M. Kirby being 7 years old, William S. Kirby being 5 years old, Barton E. Kirby being 2 years old and Joseph W. Kirby being a month old as he was born in December 1869. In the 1880 Caldwell County Census book it listed Rachel Kirby being 52 years old, Elijah Kirby was 19 and Louise was 20. On March 25, 1872, Enoch Kerby/Kirby died in Caldwell County, Lenoir, North Carolina but I don't know where he is buried at in Caldwell County, Lenoir, North Carolina. John H. Kirby, son of Enoch Kerby/Kirby and Susan Greenfield, is my great-great grandfather and he was born January 20, 1855 and died on January 25, 1902 in Caldwell County, Lenoir, North Carolina and he is buried at Nelson's Chapel Church cemetery off of the Kirby Mountain Road in Caldwell County, Lenoir, North Carolina. Rachel H. Kirby, second wife of Enoch Kerby/Kirby is also buried at Nelson's Chapel Church cemetery but only has a year of 1831 listed on her tombstone, so this must have been the year she was born but I have no deathdate for her. My great-grandfather, Letcherd Reeves Kirby, son of John H. Kirby and Florence Chandler, is also buried at Nelson's Chapel Church cemetery along with my great-grandmother, Nora Bell Edmisten.
I would really appreciate any more help. E-mail me anytime. Thanks.
