Thanks for the quick response. First of all, I hate to disappoint your grandson, but after extensive research there is no documentation that we were related to Buf.Bill. There are a lot of family stories, but they don't hold much water so far.
I read the 1880 census from some CD's I bought, that is what I sent first. So now I looked at the handwritten census and this is what I read:
1880 census, Gridley, Mc Lean, IL (Dist. 173, page 7)
Kearfott, Hogluna wm 66m Laborer VA VA VA
Mary wf 61m Wife keeps house OH VA OH
Michael E.wm 17s Son works on farm OH VA OH
(The last letter on Hoglun is very hard to read, looks like an A or an N)
Needless to say, I am certain this is William Hoagland and his son Michael didn't die as the book states.
