Hello Anth,
You have made a good start into learning about your family. Many people key their surname into a search engine. You may well find you are not related to anyone here in any way at all but you should make many new friends who will assist you in finding more details about your family.
You start with yourself and then work back via parents, grand parents, great grand parents. Enter your name in the search engine again and see if other sites apart from Genealogy Genforum appear and have a look at them. Keep a note of the sites where people are searching for people with the same surname (enter them in Favourites if you like). I met a couple of very distant relations online on a genealogy site and met them in person at a small meeting for amateur genealogists that I organised in Belfast on Saturday 29th July this year.
