My Kernans were from Ireland, came first to upstate NY (Onondaga Co.)
and ended up in IA. I can't find them in the census records before 1870, however,
so wonder if they were IL or some other place in between. They were both (John
Kernan and Margaret Whalen from Ireland, and not Scotland. And they were Catholic.
John was naturalized on 7 Jan 1856 in Onondaga Co.
