Hello Nigel,
I live in Texas and I have a lot of genealogy information on the Kersh family. My branch in the family came to America in 1744 from Zuzenhausen, Germany. The father of our branch was named Hans Georg Kersh (Kirsch). They arrived in South Carolina and eventually traveled to Mississippi in 1828 and my branch ended up here (in Texas) following the end of the Civil War.
One of my uncles told me he believed that we were originally from Russia, but I recall stories told to my by my father that a local shopkeeper who was German (in the early 1900's) often told my grandfather Kersh "Mr. Kersh, you are a Jew".Why, I do not know.
Most of my father's uncles and other members of the family were small in stature, had dark eyes and dark hair. So, it made sense to me that by origin, we could be Jews.
I have searched the online information regarding Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps and saw among the listings of the dead that the name Kersh (or Kirsch) appears there. It does not seem improbable to me that I could somehow be related to these people.
Do you have more information on your family?I am always interested in learning more of the heritage of my family and I hope to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Kathryn Kersh Nicholson
