Richard “Kettle” – Charlestown, Mass, 1633

In my posting of March 27, 2004 on the Kittell-Collier family of Boston and Chesterfield, Mass., (see "Kittell" Forum) I listed some preliminary data on Richard, who was in Charlestown by July 30, 1633. On that date he was admitted to the church there. He was ancestor to many of the families in that area named Kettle, Kittell, Kettell, etc.

I will later offer a more complete posting on Richard, but at present I will note that the most complete coverage I have yet seen is in vol. 2 of “The Great Migration Begins ,” pages 1124-28 (Robert Charles Anderson, NEHGS, 1995). Richard seems to have typically used the spelling “Kettle,” although there were exceptions. Anderson ventures no English origin for Richard, but estimates his date of birth as about 1614. (This is based on a court document of January 1674/75.) He married Esther (or Hester) Ward between 1633 and 1637. She had been maid to Atherton Haugh of Boston before their marriage. Esther died at Charlestown 2 July 1679, and “Sergeant Richard Kettle” had died before 12 July 1680.

The children of Richard and Esther are given by Anderson as I listed them on March 27, but there are some discrepancies in their marriages as I gave them. I will correct these in a later posting. Oldest child Hannah (bp. Charlestown 29 Oct 1637) m. John or Jonathan Call in 1656. Oldest son John (b. 1639) spent some time in Sudbury, Mass. and seems to have moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire by 1665. (There was also a John Kettle in Essex County, Mass. from 1654 to 1685. This individual may have lived for a period in Lancaster, Mass. about 1670, but the picture isn’t clear. Any relationship of this individual to Richard Kettle is unknown.) Sons Joseph (b. 15 Feb 1640/41), Samuel (b. 19 Nov 1642), Nathaniel (b. 11 Oct 1644) and Jonathan (b. perhaps 1646) seem to have remained in Charlestown or vicinity. (Nathaniel married his 2d wife, Hannah Kidder, in Sudbury, 1672, however.)

I will post more information on Richard Kittle and descendants at some later date, but will try to answer individual inquiries. I have easy access to “Register” and Charlestown published records.
