Karin, the McKey, etc. is of course IrishandScotish. The Key Family is found with the spelling Key as early as abt 1068 in Yorkshire County, England. There were many early spellings and derivations for the name. Some were Quay, Kei, Keese while latter versions are Kea, Kee, Kay, Keyes, Keay and so on.Some have even suggested that we are descended from the brother of King Arthur whose name was Sir Quay. That of course is just that --- a suggestion which is not founded. My own Key Family was from Settrington, East Ridding, England in Yorkshire County. There was a John Key listed there in the Dooms Day Census of abt. 1068 AD.My progenitor came to Virginia in 1668.His name was John Key and his son John Junior married Mary Palmer d/o Capt. Martin Palmer. They had a son named Martin Key B. abt 1670.His son John Key married Martha Tandy and the rest is well known history in the history of the Key Family which was described as the "Famous Key Family" of Virginia.Hope this helps.
