Origins of Key name

I am new here and am just trying to get my bearings. Here's what I know: my father was Dudley Key, born in San Frencisco, son of Albert Henry Key, born in Toronto, Ontario. His wife was Catherine Key, nee Goodyear, born in Folkestone, England. Beyond that, I know nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

I have heard stories from my ancestors about the origins of the Key name. One story is that it originated in Scotland as MacKey, Mackey, Mackie, McKay, etc.

But I have also become aware of Ellen Key, an early feminist from Sweden. Key doesn't sound like a Swedish name, so where does that come from?

I have some knowledge of the Key family history in Maryland and would be happy to share that, but you may be way ahead of me here.
