S.E. Keyes
The Well Known Superintendent of the Kane County Alms House, is Summoned -- After an illness of a month due to Brights disease and other complications, S.E.Keyes, superintendent of the Kane county Alms House and poor farm, died Sunday at 1:15 p.m.
Mr. Keyes was born at Berlin, New York, December 16th, 1850. He came to Kane county, locating on a farm near Hampshire. He resided there until 1888. In 1884, when N.S.Carlisle was sheriff, he appointed Mr. Keyes one of his deputies, and he served faithfully in that capacity for three years. At the expiration of his term he returned to his farm, but had been there but one year when he was called upon, in 1888, to become the superintendent of the county poor farm. He has successfully managed it ever since.
Mr. Keyes was peculiarly adapted to the superintendency of the poor farm, and one who performed the duties in an efficient manner. Mrs. Keyes' kindly disposition has made her a most able helpmate to her husband in the work in which they were engaged.
Mr. Keyes was a man of strong character, who held the esteem and respect of all with whom he became acquainted. He was a member of the Rock City lodge of Odd Fellows of Batavia and of the Modern Woodmen. He was an active worker in republican politics and had served as a member of the republican county committee. He leaves considerable property, among which is a large farm near Hampshire, also one near St. Charles and a house and lot in Batavia. The estate is said to be worth $30,000.
Besides his widow, whose maiden name was Eliza Smith, he leaves one son, Fred, of Batavia, and three daughters, Mrs. Fred Mattoon of Hampshire, Mrs. John Ross of Omaha, and Miss Jane Keyes of Batavia.
One brother, Willis H. Keyes of Hampshire, survives him as do five sisters, Mrs. N.S. Carlisle of St. Charles, Mrs. Mary Carlisle of Hampshire, Mrs. Betsey Hawley of Hampshire, Mrs. Charles Holtgreen of Hampshire and Mrs. William Divine of La Fox.
The funeral was held Tuesday at 2 o'clock from the Methodist church at Batavia. Interment at the East Batavia cemetery.
Friends from St. Charles attending the funeral were J.B.T. Wheeler, Preston Hurd, Mrs. E.J. Fellows, Mrs. Nettie Gilbert, E.F. Goodell, Gus Swantson, Frank Muth and E.C. Cook, who was one of the eight honorary pall bearers.
Twenty-three relatives from Hampshire came to St. Charles and went with other relatives from here, Mr. and Mrs. N.S. Carlisle and Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Wilcox. Part of the company, five carriage loads, drove over. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Carlisle of Effingham were in attendance. The court house was closed out of respect for the deceased and to allow the officials to attend the funeral. (Posted as a courtesy, not related.)
