My William made his way to California in 1850 till his death in 1893. His son, wife, and grandchildren pretty much stayed in california for the years to come (1900s). This is why it has been so difficult, it seems like he left his old life behind when he headed west. I have to wonder if he served in military or something of the sort before heading west, if he infact arrived in 1850, that puts him at 26. If he wasnt working, he must have found himself in service of some kind. I haven't been able to produce results though to support that thought. Just throwing ideas out there.
