The Mormom church has put a searchable 1880 census online
at www.familysearch.org. It was the 1890 census that was destroyed in the early part of the 20th century. You may want to try to find a large library near where you think he may have lived, call them to ask if they have older city directories on microfilm or in their original book form. You may find him with his address and then you can look him up in the 1900 census.
Good luck in your search!
