I am really just getting started on my KILMER line. My great-great-grandmother was ALICE KILMER, or Louisa Alice Kilmer, or I've even seen it as Laura A. Kilmer in a census of Ohio. Alice was the daughter of John H. Kilmer (of Pine Plains, NY) and Sarah Harrison (of Laconia or Taconic, NY). She had sisters: Mary Cordelia b. 1849; Hannah Louisa b. 1850; and Betsy A. b. 1858. Alice was born in 1851. All the children were born in Sheffield, MA. Mary Cordelia m. William Whitford in 1870 in Sheffield, MA. Alice m. William S. Benton on Dec 5, 1867 at the tender age of 16 - William was 46. Was this his 2nd marriage? If so, did he have previous children? He was probably from the Otis, MA area and his parents were Stephen Benton and Susan Jones. William and his uncle, Simeon Benton and 2 other cousins headed into the Western Reserve of Ohio landing in Medina County, in the town of Litchfield. There 4 children were born to William and Alice, 3 girls and a boy - one of which was my great-grandmother. Just about the time the son was born in 1874, William died unexpectedly, leaving Alice a widow with 4 young children. Court records indicate a guardianship case. At one point Alice took the children back to MA presumably to be closer to her family. However, the courts decreed or someone did that the children be returned to Ohio. I do find a reference to a Mrs. Ryviele, the widow, in these guardianship papers about 1876. I can find no record of this particular name anywhere at this point in time. I would love to connect with anyone from this Kilmer family or someone who could help me find more information on William Benton and his siblings and possibly previous marriage.
If there is anything I can help you with here in Ohio I would be glad to help.
I also have been given information that Alice died Jan. 12, 1920 in Clayton, MA, possibly at the home of one of her sisters.
