The family story as I know it: three brothers and at least one sister, living in family home which faced the lake. One cold winter day the brothers were looking out the window and were fascinated to see a man carrying hay across the frozen lake (a short cut) to feed cattle. As they watched, the ice gave way and the man fell through, into the lake. Two of the Kilroe brothers ran to the rescue, carrying a ladder but the ice gave way under them too, so that all three men were struggling in the icy lake. The third brother, horrified, fled to their rescue, but he too fell in and all four men were drowned. Shortly after this the widow of one of the brothers gave birth to a baby boy (circa 1828) and that boy was my great great grandfather. His mother remarried and went to Canada leaving the little boy to be brought up by an aunt, Miss Moran. He worked in Castle Coote Mills (linen) and eventually went into farming. He married three times. First wife was Susan Robinson (mother of my great grandfather James - 1848). His other two wives had children as well - traced to Australia, Canada and USA. My great grandfather was a Geology Professor at University of Dublin (we have a copy of a text book that he wrote). I would like to hear what you know about the Kilroe name and would be glad to add any info I have.
