The will of Susannah Smart, written 11 June 1850 with a codicil added 12 July 1850 and proven in January 1852 in Mecklenburg Co., NC includes, “11th I will & bequeath to the children of my grand Niece, Margaret Kimbrel, wife of James Kimbrel, of York District, South Carolina, the sum of three hundred dollars.” In the codicil she adds, “7th I will and bequeath to my grand niece, Margaret Kimbrall, one hundred dollars, in addition to the three hundred dollars willed to her.”
On October 24, 1854 the Clerk of Court signed a receipt that included $325.72 for “The children of Margaret Kimbrall (wife of James Kimbrall)” and $109.57 for “Margaret Kimbrall (wife of James Kimbrall).”
Susannah [Barnett] Smartt, my 3rd g-grandaunt, outlived her husband, three children and two grandchildren. She divided her not inconsiderable estate among many more-distant descendants and others. I seek to identify them since many are my relatives. One I have yet to identify is the wife of James Kimbrel/Kimbrall.
The 1850 census of York Co., SC has a James Kimbrel, 31, with a wife Margaret, 28, and children John, 7 and James, 5. A John Kimbrel, 17 and Sophina Kimbrel, 23, are also in that household. All were given as born in York District.
Margaret may have died before 1860. The census of York District for that year has a Jas Kimbrel, 46, Jane Kimbrel age not given, with children John, 16, James, 14, Mary S, 12, Wm W, 9, Martin, 7 and William Dallas, 1. The family of a John Kimbrel, age 30, is next door. In 1870 there is a household in Ft. Mill, York District of James Kimbrell, 57, Jane, 45, John, 24, James, 22, M S (female), 20, W W (male), 18, Martin, 16, Wm. D, 12 and Robert, 10. In 1880 there is a James, age 60 and a widower with sons John S., 36, “Babe,” 34, Dallas, 18 and daughter Maggie, 16, living with him.
I suspect Margaret was the mother of the children Martin and older and that Jane was the mother of the younger children.
Can anyone give me Margaret’s maiden name and/or her lineage?
