Clarence Kincaid/Sewell

It has always been told in my family that our last name should have been Kincaid instead of Sewell, because my great grandfather, Clarence Sewell, took on the Sewell name. According to records we have found, it appears Clarence was adopted by Lizzie and John Sewell in SC. We are not sure who Clarence's birth parents could be because the only record of birth is a delayed birth record, which I believe is because he was adopted, plus they didn't keep very good vital records back then. He was born in 1889 in NC or SC. He had a brother named George Kincaid, and a couple other siblings I believe. They resided in Red Bluff, SC in 1910. Later on they lived in Wilmington, NC and then Roanoke Rapods. Does anyone have any information on a Sewell/Kincaid adoption?? Any information would be great...I've hit a brick wall! Thanks!
