I really hate to open this can of worms, but...have any of you heard rumors of a Jesse James connection in your Kincaid line? The reason I ask is that my grandmother said that her grandmother (Nancy Kincaid, b: 1865 in Estill co., KY) was related to Jesse James. When I first started researching my family history ~ 10 years ago, I didn't find anything, so quickly dismissed this rumor. The problem is that all these years later, I'm still stuck on Nancy Kincaid's lineage. Her death certificate list her parents as "George and Mary Ann Kincaid", but I still don't know Mary Ann's maiden name or which George Kincaid was her father. I've found a few candidates, but nothing definitive. Perhaps Mary Ann's maiden name was also Kincaid (e.g. a cousin)? Or she was unmarried and the informant didn't know the father's surname? At the moment, all I have are theories. Ok, now getting back to the Jesse James rumors. Whether or not my Nancy Kincaid was related to Jessie James, this rumor had to start somewhere. Even false rumors have a seed of truth, however small. My hope is that this seed will lead me to Nancy's parents. Perhaps Mary Ann's maiden name was James? Or it was another surname associated with the James family? Apparently, there were other families in Estill, Madison, Garrard and surrounding areas that claimed a Jessie James connection (e.g. Halls, Bishops), so this is a possibility. I hope you don't mind my ramblings. I'm probably on a wild goose chase, but I would love to hear from others abIout this. Debbie www.familypast.com P.S. For those familiar with mtDNA analysis, Nancy Kincaid was haplogroup H3. Not sure if it helps, but I thought I would mention it. Notify Administrator about this message?
