Joyce,What you say about Margaret is exactly right. She was the 10th child of John Kincheloe and his wife Elizabeth. Margaret did marry George Foote, Jr. of Fauquier Co., Va. He died in Caswell Co., NC. If you go back and read the posting to which you responded, you will see that I do not agree at all that John Kincheloe's wife was Elizabeth Canterbury. John *was indeed* married to a woman named Elizabeth, but unfortunately we do not know Elizabeth's maiden name. I have made a thorough search of the Kincheloe, Williams, and Canterbury records in Richmond County and adjacent county records, and there is absolutely no document that identifies John Kincheloe's wife as Elizabeth Canterbury.(John and Elizabeth were married in Richmond County. John owned 100 acres of land there. One Canterbury family lived in that county, too. That's why I have dug into those records.)There *is* an Elizabeth Canterbury living at the time John Kincheloe (d. 1746) and his wife Elizabeth were having children, but *that* Elizabeth Canterbury was married to John Canterbury, Jr. Her maiden name was Smith & she was the daughter of William Smith, John Kincheloe's neighbor. Elizabeth Canterbury was having her children with John Canterbury at the same John Kincheloe was having his first three children with his Elizabeth (_____). Completely different person! L. D. McPherson and the genealogists who contributed to his _Kincheloe, McPherson and Related Families_ totally misread and misrepresented the Canterbury documents that are in the Richmond County Courthouse and this has caused great confusion. In no place, however, in any Canterbury family document is John Kincheloe's wife listed as Elizabeth Canterbury! I have seen the original documents & I know this to be the case. Regarding any connection between the Kincheloe and Canterbury families, I strongly encourage folks to do what I did: go to the original records and verify what is being claimed. Folks who rely on the McPherson account -- and there are many who do, directly or indirectly! -- are getting some bad genealogical information. I don't know of "Chotankers, A Family History," but I would be glad to know of a verifiable citation can prove Elizabeth's maiden name. Literally, I have spent years verifying all the earliest records of the Kincheloe family. I have gone to original documents to verify things about the earliest genealogy and spellings of the family name.My conclusion is that we simply don't know the maiden name of Elizabeth, John Kincheloe's wife. No original records exist that tell us that piece of information. Records do tell us that the only Elizabeth Canterbury alive at that time and in that place was married to John Canterbury & not to John Kincheloe. I have nothing against "Canterbury." In fact, I'd love it if we knew Elizabeth's maiden name. What I want is to be accurate about genealogical lineages. Unfortunately, Elizabeth's maiden name is a lost piece of family history.
And I think that if you check the original Richmond County records, you will see that Elizabeth Canterbury was not the child of John Canterbury, Sr. and Ruth Williams Canterbury. Their son, John Canterbury, Jr., married Elizabeth Smith, and she thus became Elizabeth Canterbury. Her father, William Smith, neighbor to Cornelius Kinselloe(Kinshello, Chenshello), and later to Cornelius' son John Kincheloe, gave the newly married Elizabeth Canterbury a slave for a wedding present. Those were very different times....
Sorry to go on so long. If you want me to cite particular documents, I'll be glad to. And if you want to give me a citation for any original document. I'd love to hear from you.
John
