What is the terminology for "Dr" (and Not Doctor) used during this war?

In documents William Pepperrell's papers and letters etc. I have noted Several men's names having "Dr" after it and I feel quite certain that it doesn't stand for Doctor unless everyone was a doctor in this war.
Can anyone help me out on what this might have stood for? I'm sure its something quite simple, but my brain can't seem to come up with it.
Thank you
