1. Death: died at Louisbourg after capture of fortress there by New England Militia and British Navy on 17 June, 1745. This was during what is referred to in U.S. as King George's War but often known in Europe as the War of the Austrian Sucession. The fortress dominated the entrance to
the St. Lawrence river, and was used by the French as a base for raids on the English settlers of New England. After its fall, it was occupied until 1748 by the English, when it was handed back to the French by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapple which ended the war. During that first winter of
1745 to 1746, at least one half of the garrison left behind in the fort were sick, and nearly one third died.

" The English considered that Louisbourg was a worthless card, or so it seems, for they readily gave it back to the French in 1748, by the terms of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. The colonies were not to forget that the English authorities gave so little regard to their great feat of
arms: they bled for cause of Britain at Louisbourg and close on to 2000 of their men were to die there; 28 years later they would bleed again in another cause, the cause of freedom and the American Revolution, the roots of which can most certainly be traced back to the shores and bogs of Louisbourg."
