Hi John, Thanks for your response. Your mason John is not one of our Johns but I know so little of collateral lines that he could easily descend from one of them. Certainly, masons & builders etc. went right down the senior lines from my 5xgt-grandfather's time. His father was John, so after that there were several Johns on the Family Tree, but I don't know what he did for a living.
Interestingly, we have an Alexander Kinghorn who married Catherine Murphy in Liverpool in 1826. They lived there until between Feb. 1835 & Feb. 1837 when they returned to Leith where Alexander was from in the first place. He was a "brewer" & died in 1838 so maybe it wasn't all that healthy an occupation!
