I have important information to share with the descendants of Justus Kingman and his wife Patty. (I have found her surname listed as Lewis and Chapman, so Iím not sure of the correct name.) The family can be found in Pompey, Onondaga County, NY according to the 1830 US Federal Census. It appears that Justus may have died between then and 1832, when his widow and several of their children ended up in the Onondaga County Poorhouse. According to the Poorhouse records, three of the younger children, Joseph b. abt 1829, Lafayette, born abt 1827 and Sally, born abt 1824 all died within a month of each other in March and April 1832. Other siblings in the poorhouse were Huldah, born May 29, 1817 or 1818, Henry, born Sep 9, 1820 or 1821, and Jason, born Jun 11, 1819. These three children were bound out to families within the community. I have been able to trace Jason Kingman to Gratiot Co., MI, but he doesnít appear to have had any children. I have not been able to trace Henry or Huldah, and it would appear from the 1830 Census record, that there were two older sons, born between 1821 and 1825, whose names I do not know.
The reason that I am looking for Justusí descendants is that the bodies of the three children who died in the poorhouse have been exhumed and identified, and will be reburied at the Loomis Hill Cemetery in the Town of Onondaga tomorrow, and I would love to let any descendants know about this. I have been working with the archaeologists who were called in to examine the site of the old poorhouse when human remains were unearthed during renovation which was being done for Onondaga County Community College. The Onondaga County Poorhouse records are available at the Town of Onondaga Historians Office. I was able to transcribe these records for the time period when the burials took place, and this is how the archaeologists were able to positively identify the Kingman children.
If you have any contacts, would you please let me know, or better yet, feel free to forward this message along to them. I will be at the re-interment tomorrow. A ceremony is being scheduled by the Onondaga Community College, and I can let you know when that is scheduled if you are interested.
