Melynie:

My earliest record for Samuel is 1840 Census, Ross County, Ohio. He is listed as 30-40 yrs. old. The 1850 Census, August 5, 1850, shows him as age 44. The 1860 Census, June 28, 1860, shows him as age 55, 1870 Census lists him as 61. (by this time his wife was dead and he was living with 2 maiden daughters and a granddaughter)

He died July 2 1879. His tombstone states he was 72 yrs, 6 mos, 28 days, which would give you a birth date of December 5, 1806.

So...I'm not 100% sure, but most of the evidence supports the date derived from the tombstone.
