Malcolm,
Dean George Story (my Ancestor) was Chaplain to William 111 at the Boyne in 1690 and his book (1693) "An Impartial Account of the Wars in Ireland" is part of my reading material. Have you forgotten that essentially England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland were Republics during the Cromwellian period ?
Are you aware that William claimed Kingship also of France following the Boyne ?
I know what you are trying to say, but you are missing the point - you stated that James was not a Scottish King. That is inaccurate. His whole interests were Scottish, his Ancestors and cousins were Scottish and his army, while largely Irish included Scottish, French and several other minor nationalities. Have you read Pender's Book which lists his Officers and all other ranks ? That answers a lot of questions about the origins of his army and James' admitted nationality.
