Williamite Heroes from Monaghan - 1689 - Siege of Derry

A book entitled "Fighters of Derry" caught my attention and guess what - my home County of Monaghan was strongly represented at the Siege of Derry in 1689. Naturally, my wife's Ancestors - the Johnstons - were listed prominently in the book with Squire Johnston of Glaslough, Co. Monaghan, actually signing the Declaration to King William following the successful end of the siege with the retreat of King James and the lifting of the siege.
Other Johnstons of Glaslough included - Baptist Johnston who was 2nd in command of Matthew Ancketell's Regiment at the Battle of Drumbanagher in 1689. He was also at the Siege of Derry in the same year.
William Johnston, an Officer in Squire Johnston's Regimen, was also at the Siege and when he died in 1753 was buried at Armagh Cathedral.
Alexander Johnston (brother of William above)also an Officer in Squire Johnston's Regiment, and of County Monaghan, was honoured in the Derry Cathedral Window erected in 1913. Descendants of this Johnston are Henry A.Johnston & H.Stott Johnston of Kilmore, Co. Armagh.
The famous Architect Francis Johnston is also a descendant of this line, according to Young, author of this book.
Captain Joseph Johnston of Co. Monaghan, also an Officer in Squire Johnston's Regiment, died as a result of a bomb at the Siege of Derry - 1689.
Walter Johnston of Mellick, Co. Fermanagh, is thought to be related to the Monaghan Johnstons - he was listed by King James in the "Attainted List of 1689"
This book contains a host of other names from Monaghan, Armagh, Cavan & Fermanagh, indicating the enthusiasm which many persecuted Protestants saw the potential for fairness from King William as against the discrimination of King James who had removed Protestants from all positions of Authority irrespective of their qualifications.
