Williamites settling in Athlone, co.Westmeath?

This is a hunch posting! We have an ancestor, Robert MECHAM, who is considered to have settled in Athlone in the mid-to late 1690s. He was Protestant and settled at Kilmacuagh (later called Kilmacuagh-Mechum) to the sourh-east of Athlone city. He witnessed the will of Peter Longworth, his neighbour, in 1698. Longworth was ex-Cromwell soldier, who reportedly rode with his several sons to join King William's forces. Athlone had a large English garrison by the late 1690s.

Thus, it is suspected that MECHAM (born c1670)was a paid-off Williamite soldier, or left one of the garrisoned regiments to settle in Athlone. Welcome any advice on how to proceed, or on Williamites settling in Athlone. Mick Mecham
