Despite the confusion in that 1920 census, Reynolds Kinkade (probably more accurately Robert Reynolds Kinkade) was born in 1854 in Keokuk County, Iowa, the 11th child of Eleazer and Hannah (Lyons) Kinkade. Eleazer, son of James and Nancy Kinkade, was born in Brooke County, VA (now West Virginia) and Hannah was born in Pennsylvania. They moved west to Ohio and then on to Iowa.
Our subject is listed in the 1860 census for Keokuk County as Robert R. Kinkade, 5 years old. In the 1870 census, he is Reynolds Kinkade, 15. In the 1880 census Reynolds Kinkade is an attorney in Toledo, 25, living at a boarding house. In all cases, his parents were listed as being born in Virginia and Pennsylvania, respectively. I have not looked for him in the 1900 and 1910 census. In that 1920 census, he is listed as 59 which is six years too young but I cannot understand how he was listed as being born in Ohio with both parents born in Kentucky. I feel this must be an enumerator’s mistake. Notice the Who’s Who listing has him born in 1854 which would agree with him being 65.
Family legend says he served as a judge in Toledo. I doubt if there were two attorneys, later to become judges, in Toledo with that name and that close in age. He is a distant relative of mine (first cousin, three times removed) and if you have any more questions on the family, please message me.
