My understanding is that with Kinloch meaning the head of the loch or lake, it is a positional rather than a clan name. Note the towns of Kinlochleven and Kinlochewe etc are at the end of Loch Leven or Loch Ewe. IT also explains why not all Kinlochs seem to come from the same source and probably why we don't have a Kinloch tartan.
I was interested to discover that the Irish name with the same meaning and same pronunciation is Kinlough. Their lakes are loughs not lochs.
