Good morning Darci!
This is exciting. The Kinnear family has been a real challenge for me for quite a while. I've known of John Kinnear (b. 1780) for a long time. He would have been the father of your John Grey and my Elizabeth. My Elizabeth married Ezra Van Fossen who was originally from Eastern Ohio. Ezra went to Rush Medical School in Chicago and upon completing his studies there moved to Randolph county, Indiana. He would have met and married Elizabeth there. They subsequently move to Adel, Iowa (Dallas county) and he practiced medicine there. Elizabeth's father John in mentioned in a Van Fossen family history that my mother now has. It was a long time before any of my genealogy loving cousins knew of John's wife Sarah Grey/Gray. I found reference to her at Winchester, Indiana (county seat of Randolph county) and learned that both Sarah and John are buried at Ritenour Cemetery near Deerfield. I've been to the cemetery, but there are no grave markers. I would need to look up my source for these dates, but I have that John Kinnear (John Grey's and Elizabeth's father) was born 2 May 1780. According to Elizabeth's 1860, 1870, and 1880 census records, he was born in Pennsylvania, but I have a note on my pedigree chart that he could have been born in Maryland. John Kinnear died 22 April 1839. Sarah Grey/Gray Kinnear was born in 1792 in Ireland. The date would have come from the information I found at Winchester, Indiana. She died 12 Mar. 1867. Again, they both died at Randolph county, Indiana. Also, according Elizabeth's census records, Sarah was born in Ireland. But, I can't get back any farther!!! There is a fantastic genealogy about the Kinnears called "The Kinnears and Their Kin", that was written about 1910, but I can't locate our John in it. Your reference to family members moving on to Kansas is helpful, because if I remember correctly, "The Kinnears and Their Kin" book does make references to Kinnears in Kansas. I'll have to look.

Did Ida's bible happen to confirm John Kinnear and Sarah Grey as parents or list death dates that we could verify with what I found?
