CLARK, Michael Kirchwey - 86, Central Argyle, passed away peacefully in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on April 2, 2006. Born June 27, 1919, in New York City, Mr. Clark was the son of the late Freda Kirchwey and Evans Clark. He was educated at Exeter Academy, University of North Carolina and Harvard University. The French language became his lifelong study after attending Mediterranean University Centre (now University of Nice) in Nice, France. During the Second World War, he worked for the American Field Service as an ambulance driver in the Middle East, and following the war worked as a staff reporter for the New York Times in New York, Paris, North and West Africa and the Middle East. Mr. Clark subsequently worked for Untied Nations agencies in Geneva, Switzerland, including the International Labour Organization (ILO), and as Chief of Press for the European Headquarters of the UN. His last duty station for the UN was in Tokyo as Director of the UN Information Centre and, concurrently, as Representative of UNICEF and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). He was also Director of Information with United Nations University Headquarters in Tokyo (1984). Mr. Clark was the author of "Algeria in Turmoil" and co-author of "The Trade Union Situation in Sweden", and numerous articles for various publications. His decorations include the French Legion of Honor and Croix de Guerre. He was also an amateur pilot. Mr. Clark is survived by his wife, Makiko Kanada Clark, and his three children, son, Philip Evans Clark, wife Amy and granddaughter Nina; daughter, Marie Gabrielle Selarque, husband Alex and grandchildren Chloé and Sébastien; and son, Antony Geoffrey Hudek. A requiem mass will be held in Holy Trinity Church in Yarmouth, Monday, April 17, at 3 p.m., Rev. Krista Hilton officiating, assisted by Father MacAllister Ellis and Father Murice LeBlanc. Reception to follow in the church hall. A memorial service will be held at The Ardnamurchan Club, Central Argyle, during the summer. The family has deeply appreciated the assistance of family, friends, physicians and home care workers. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to UNICEF. Arrangements have been entrusted to H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Yarmouth.
